One way car hire USA

Can anyone recommend who is cheapest to travel 1-way by car in USA? I am going from Indianapolis on 5th July to arrive in/near Boston/Providence RI on 7th July.

Any suggestions welcome! :j

Alas no one is always cheapest - rates vary with the availability of cars. You have to research it for your particular dates.

You will need a major company - Hertz, Avis, etc - smaller ones won't have a depot in both places.

Alternatively try a consolidator - Auto Europe, Carhire 3000, etc. You'll probably have to call them, it wont be offered online.

There's also a thing called driveaway (google for it) - but the chances of something being available at the exact time you want it are slim to non existent.

I'm also looking at one way car hire in USA (Las Vegas to LA)

The one way fees seem pretty extortionate, but on Hertz's website I can't find any mention of one way fees.
When you need to pick up your rental car at one location and return to another, contact Hertz.

    • Pick up and return your vehicle at one of Hertz’ 1,700 US locations

    • At Hertz Local Edition locations, convenient Customer Pickup and Return
Service within 15 minutes of the location is available for your one-way rental

    • Competitive rates with no separate Drop-Off Fees.

    • Perfect for road trips or attending to business needs in multiple cities
Does this really mean that what they're quoting me of ~£27 is IT??? Plus the young driver surcharge of $25 of course, but that really does seem to be with every company.

Or are they going to sting me with a massive charge when I turn up to collect the car?
Excuse any mis-spelt replies, there's probably a cat sat on the keyboard
  • Try one of the "Driveaway" companies (google it). These are auto shipping companies that pair clients who need cars moved from one end of the country to another with people who are happy to undertake long one-way road trips. Provided you are old enough, meet the requirements and can leave a three figure deposit (normally on a credit card) you might be able to find someone who needs a car to be taken vaguely where you want to go.

PS... or you could take the train. Amtrak could sell you a one way fare for about $120, and you'd get a great overland scenic trip without the hassle or cost of driving, with a stop in Chicago.

Las Vegas to LA, 10 months in advance, on a particular day, with a driver under 25?

Looks like I'm phoning up hertz to find out then.

we're just trying to work out whether it's worth getting a package holiday or not at the moment.

If you only want to get from Las Vegas to LA, I would suggest flying. Southwest Airlines have fares as low as $44 if booked at the right time, free drink and one hour later you are there. The road journey is around 5 hours on an Interstate with very little to see on the way. Some large rental companies will allow one ways between California and Nevada but I am not sure they would allow it for a one day rental without a large one way supplement. Just to give you a real example, I was stranded at Durham Tees Airport and needed a one way rental to London Avis in their smallest Fiat charged me over £100, that's what happens with rentals you don't bring back to the starting point!

I've used Holiday Autos to book one-way car hire in Europe in the past and it has worked out fine with no additional charge. Obviously, it could be different for the US but it may be worth a try.

There should not be a one way fee for this rental if you shop around. Generally most rental companies have quotes that do not have a one way fee for rentals between California, Arizona and Nevada states.
