Umm... yes you are actually trading if you buy with the intention to sell and should be registered with HMRC and pay taxes on any profits! I buy particular items from carboots/ebay to resell and have to be registered to pay tax even though I'm only making 'a little extra on the side'.

i agree as i also do the same with second hand items (i also buy some wholesale) but i'm still registerd with hmrc even if it was just the odd second hand bits. I don't make much 'just a bit on the side' for hols etc but it's not worth the risk of getting caught by the ebay bots. people who buy to sell on are going to get caught eventually essp buying clothes of various sizes.

I sometimes buy second hand clothes from the carbooty- like NEXT, Monsoon and Dorothy Perkins or Topshop, Per Una etc and sell it on e-bay.

It can be hit and miss- I usually pay 50p to £1.00 per item and always start my listing at 99p ( no listing fee) and add on a decent postage charge ( i.e postage cost approx £1.20 - I charge £2.20). In this way even if it only makes 99p I do not loose out and sometimes it makes a tidy profit too!!!
I hope you find this useful and good luck with your e-baying!!!:)

PS- I'm not a business seller just trying to make a little extra money and use it to buy treats for myself and my family via e-bay.

Sorry but you are a business and you are also in the category that ebay are targetting for the forced upgrade.

You need to upgrade your account on ebay and register with HMRC as others have said.

Do you know what??? I'm fed up for being attacked for having a little fun- and just for your info you all well informed e-bayers (HA!) I only completed 55 sales in one year- hardy warrants your militant attitute of wanting me to upgrade to a business account. And I also sell my own and my daughters clothing as well that I bought from the carbooty previously...

PS - I use all the money to buy goods on e-bay and pay tax at all level.
I have something stronger to add but do not want to cross the forum line!!!

I understand your frustration but why do you think you are not a business?

It would hardly have been helpful though to ignore a post that suggests defrauding HMRC. The OP is going to be running a business and a post popping up suggesting that fraud is the way to go about this, will surely have caused a great deal of issues for the OP should the statement have stood uncorrected.

Like it or not, you're running a business.

Not that i care - you can explain it to the IR via the sales they can track via ebay.

They're well known for being very understanding. :rotfl:

Thank you Hughesy84 for bringing back the focus to the original question.

I have also learned my lesson and will not post any ideas in the future in case I have the HM Inland Revenue and the Fraud Sqad knocking on my door for making £100 - £150 per year...

As for CYBERBOB why don't you just stone me while you are at it for "my silly rants'.

    cocoloco over and out!
