compaq laptop

Apparently the fan has packed up in my daughter's laptop, the IT dept at her work looked at it and told her. Its 17 months old. Would it be possible to repair and how much should we expect to pay for the repair

I have a Compaq C700 and the fan has gone on it. However it has been diagnosed as a faulty mother board. The fault is a symptom of a problem with an overheating NVDIA (google: HP Lies for details) Good luck with the claim.

does that mean its a manufacturer's fault, or do you think I am unlikely to succeed

Your contract is with the seller ie PC World. Let them worry about it being a manufacturer's fault. Don't let PCW bluff you off!

hmmmmmmmmm, what can I expect from PCW. Does this appear to be a common fault with Compaq's

Sorry to hijack this thread, but just added this thread about our laptop which has just given up ...

Anyone help with a laptop problem? When it is switched on, it appears to power up, lights come on, but screen stays blank. Shortly after it turns itself off, and then turns itself on again, and repeats until the power button is held down and it is switched off.

Cannot get anything to boot at all.

    Help!:(

The laptop in question is a Compaq Presario F500, can anyone shed any light on it please?

If your laptop has nvidia integrated graphics then you should take a look at this: http://www.nvidiadefect.com

My HP laptop has just died with the same symptoms after only 14 months, it has ATI graphics, it has always run hot and the fan has always seemed to be going at full throttle. I've taken it apart and there just doesn't seem to be enough ventilation holes for sufficient cooling airflow. Compared to my toshiba it just looks like poor design... I woudn't buy HP/Compaq again.

The fan costs very little. I replace fans for £30 including the cost of the fan. At the very most with the very worst laptop, it takes me 30 minutes. Most are easily accessible and take 5 minutes.

It is not something that you can get done under SOGA as a manufacturing defect. The life of a fan depends on how well you've cleaned it - I bet you've never blasted the dust out - and how much its operating. Many home ones run flat out a lot due to the heatsinks being clogged up by fluff from a lifetime spent being used in bed or on the knee. Most home ones I've bought for refurbishing for resale have heatsinks partially or wholly blocked up after 12 months.
