Does anyone have any idea how accurate the above, specifically the "how many more miles can you go" bit? Sorry, don't know the technical term! Mine seems to be all over the place, especially when it's very low on fuel, just when it would be really useful.

I know where it is, it just doesn't seem to be accurate. I set off this morning and it said 50 odd left, drove to work (9 miles), a couple of miles inbetween, and when I set off home tonight it was down to 17. Don't get it!

    possibly change in temp
different driving styles may affect it

theyre not accurate and should only be used as a rough guide. Theyre dependent on other factors such as harsh accelleration, whether youre stuck in traffic, driving up steep hills etc and all these things will lower the mileage meter considerably.

I heard people have run their trip meter down to 0 and driven a further 20 miles before chickening out to fill up. I havnt been brave enough to try it yet, especially on a diesel.

Thank you both. All possibilities I imagine. I've never had a car with one of these before and I'm gutted it doesn't work like I thought it would!

After it got down to 9 today, I put £35 diesel in, it went up to 275, I drove 2 miles and it went to 275, parked up and waited 10 mins for OH, switched on and it went to 348 (had been parked on a slight incline), then went all over the place and settled to 274.

I better stop now, I'm starting to sound a bit geeky :o

Fill your tank to the brim, reset the trip counter to zero, drive for a couple of hundred miles, fill the tank to the brim again, and whatever mileage is on your trip can be used to calculate the true MPG figure.

"it" cant tell how you are going to drive so it makes a best guess based on how you have driven over the last few miles. If you are driving along at 60, then get stuck in traffic it will drop as you have changed your driving style, and therefore your consumption

It works on averages. Your trip to work used more fuel than the previous trip, So it recalculates the miles left from the last trip.

It's definitely not wise to rely on the "miles to empty" information. As others have said it relies on averages over the whole tank and can be wildly inaccurate at low fuel levels. That said I've driven loads of times with the display on zero.

Thanks everyone. Averages makes sense. I'm going to turn the damn thing off because I'm getting obessed with it!
