Cot / Crib / moses basket

Hi, i am a mum 2 be and need a bit of advice.

I have purchased a moses basket and stand ready for the new arrival but my friend is selling her crib. she wants £50 for it with all the bedding too, it seems like a good offer and they are very pretty but i'm wondering if i actually need one?

My friend says they are safer than a basket. the saving is around £100 if i'd bought new and i could resell after at a similar price. :(

I will have a cot for when the baby gets bigger. I oresume they are only in these a couple of months. i have the money for it but i am wondering if its just a waste and somethign i dont really need. though it is tempting so i can keep it upstairs and have the basket downstairs but that just sounds a bit lazy!

Would appreciate opinions from people who've used them.

Thanks
:)

My DD was in her crib for just over 6 months. I bought it from ebay for £25 and just used cot bedding.

Used a natures nest for downstairs (I was given it or I would have used a moses basket or the carry cot from her pram). She was downstairs with us till about 4 months so I think you need something there as well as the bedroom.

They do outgrow moses baskets quicker than cribs just because the moses baskets quickly get unsafe when they start rolling about.

I used a moses basket downstairs and a crib upstairs - it wasn't laziness, but the stairs were very steep (terraced house) and it would have been tricky coming downstairs with the basket and baby at the same time.

I had a crib upstairs & a moses basket downstairs.

We got ours 2nd hand too, all I did was buy a new mattress for it.

We used a moses basket to start with and planned to move baby into his cot in his own room once he outgrew the basket. However, he's a big boy and outgrew the basket at 10 weeks! We don't have space in our room for the cot and we weren't ready to move him into his own room so we bought a crib on ebay. He's nearly 6 months and is just outgrowing the crib now. The crib has been very useful for us but wouldn't have been needed if the basket had lasted him longer.

If you have a pram with a carrycot part then you could use that as his/her downstairs bed and the moses basket as the night-time bed. That would save you moving the basket back and forth and could also help baby differentiate between daytime naps and night sleeps. Your baby might outgrow the basket quickly too but if you've got space in your bedroom for the cot then you could always move it there. Then you wouldn't need a crib.

I hope that helps and good luck with everything!

My LO climbed out of the crib at 2 months. Walked into the kitchen, and just managed to catch one ankle. Still banged his head though...Hmm explains a lot lol.. Seriously though baskets and cribs have a very short shelf life.

If you have the money and think you can sell it on, then go for it. Having a day bed and night bed is supposed to help with sleeping too, as well as the benefits of not manouvering up and down the stairs mentioned in other posts.

we have a cot in babies nursery (got free from netmums, just brought new mattress), swinging crib for in our bedroom (second hand just brought new mattress) and a moses basket borrowed from a friend for downstairs - we havea 3 storey house so slightly lazy but I am also due to have a c-section so cant carry moses basket up and down all the time.

If you think you can sell it on at same price do - be aware babies r us are selling a brand new swinging crib for £50 at moment with mattress which in part wish I had known before paying £20 second hand for mine sat and then ordering mattress for it at £20 (strange sizing).

Moses baskets are a waste of money because the baby will have outgrown it within two months. I got my crib for £10 from the local charity shop, and you can get them second-hand on ebay for less than £20, so your friend's offer of £50 sounds rather steep. You can certainly get a new one for less than £80 from Mothercare. Either way, you won't be using the crib for much longer than 6 months, so you could just put the baby straight into the cot...

I think you should have got the crib and not the moses basket, Elliot was 10 lbs 11 oz when he was born and he outgrew his moses basket by the time he was 5 weeks old.

He has been in his own room since then in his cot, we have monitors and he sleeps in sleeping bags rather than having sheets and blankets which is safer when you can't se him all the time as he cant wriggle down the sleeping bag like he could with sheets.

It depends on what you want to do, if you are ok putting baby in own room in their cot once they have outgrown the moses basket then dont get the crib, some babies last a while in their moses basket so baby may never get to sleep in crib

I had a moses basket for ages (my son was premature and only weighed 4 pounds 1 when he was born). I used to use it if he was asleep and I wanted to go out, I carried the moses basket and walked round my mum's etc. Doubt you could do this with a normal sized baby for long though lol. I would probably use the pram for downstairs for them to sleep in and the cot for upstairs, I know a few people who've done that.

I hate moses baskets after the handle on my daughters snapped I have just bought a dreamy cot it looks like a miniature travel cot it cost £53 and will last an average baby until they are about 10 months obviously once they can pull themselves up they should be in a normal cot. I had to get something small as i already have an 8month old and just dont have the room for two full size cots.

I have to agree with the others the crib sounds a bit steep second hand i have seen them for around £60 new with mattress and bedding.

As for sleeping down stairs all three of mine have slept on their play mats on the floor with a blanket during nap time :-)
