We bought a gooseberry stick (didn't really merit bush
) from there last year, and it didn't do anything so I thought oh well so much for plants from there! Forgot all about it, forgot to dig it up now it's covered in leaves and the beginnings of fruit!
Mum of several with a twisted sense of humour and a laundry obsession:o

We've bought quite a lot of plants and garden stuff from them and Aldi, most of it's been OK. A few non starters but not many.
We bought container compost, ordinary compost and one growbag recently (can't remember if it was Aldi or Lidl it could have been both lol) and they were all perfectly OK.0 -
Plants from Lidl seem reasonable, ask for a black bucket to put your plant in so your plant does not make a mess in your car!
I did not like the compost from lidl - more like burned bark and twigs mixed with recycled rubbish in my bag ( i had bits of plastic carrier bags etc in it)0 -

I'll second that about the compost, i opened two bags of it today (hoping one would be better than the other) & they where both exactly as mentioned above not a touch on the B&Q compost i finished yesterday.
I wondered if i'd just got a bad batch but it sounds not, i hope my plants forgive me! ha!.
Such a shame as it's put me off & i like Lidl plus it's the closest shop to me.
The compost is very cheap though, suppose you get what you pay for!.0 -
I don't have a Lidl's within easy walking distance so visit Netto's rather more. I suspect its my Netto's but my recommendation would be to go there on day one of plants being there. They don't get any watering as far as I can tell once they arrive at the store in my local.
I have an Acer Japanese Maple that I bought from Nettos and its doing brilliant as long as kept in the shade and watered well. Unfortunately I can't think of a single other thing that has. Problem is tho, whenever they have on offer something I want, I always seem to have a short week so I can't get it immediately. When I can get it a week later.., they are not overly healthy and altho I try to revive them, they just die. I think u have to be prepared to nurse them to get them to grow.
I have found better results growing stuff from seeds, buying from Sainsbury's or from buying seedlings on ebay (altho not always had good things from ebay).
As far as compost goes, the compost from Netto's is ok, but I far prefer the quality of the bags I buy from Focus. They are selling bog standard compost 3 bags for the price of two (70L bags for £5.99 so £11.98 for 3) but i have to admit I loved the miracle grow compost (seems to be coconut fibre base but it seemed much richer. That was £10 for 2 bags I think and I used it as a top dressing to help retain moisture as well as provide nutrients etc. Plants seem to love it lol0 -
Bought Lidl's Peat free compost last year..never again.Looked like shredded shrub/tree clippings which hadn't been composted smelled mouldy and it had added plastic, looked like shredded plastic bag.Tried some in container- growth of nasturtiums and french marigolds was poor.Plants were very slow growing and pale so had to add feed to every watering can. Mixed some with home made compost 1:1 and growth was a lot better. Remaining compost in bag left aside went mouldy.
I mentioned this to checkout assistant and she called manager and we got refund.
Lidls plants are usually good though only 3 of 9 gooseberries bought earlier this year produced shoots..they did refund. Keep cardboard packaging and receipts until you are happy.
This year bought some Westland Multi Purpose Compost with John Innes at Homebase. Not impressed with that.It looks same as Lidls...shredded tree/garden waste with very little JI in it . Hard to keep it moist in this dry weather...
Must make more compost this year0 -
Weirdly, I've had some of Lidl's compost and really liked it. I've got some stocks and violas in it and they are doing very well.
The only plants I've had from Lidl have been various herbs in terracotta pots, all of which have come on very well and I keep having to cut them back, and a couple of begonias that are not doing well at all and are turning brown and I can't for the life of me figure out why.0 -

Hi angeltreats
It's strange reading some of the posts isn't it, I wonder if there were different lots of peat stuff. When I looked at the old bags we had some from both Aldi and Lidl and both were fine, no different from B & Q, Focus, Homebase, Garden Centres various stuffs. We have and do use a lot as we've got a very large garden which started off three years ago as a field with very long grass on do plants.lol
We had a few plants that weren't too good. In our Aldi and Lidl I don't think they do much on the watering side quite often they are very dry but dunk them in a bucket of water and they perk up lol. I've got no idea why some don't do so well.0 -

Could be as simple as, how thorough individual staff members are at looking after the stock. It only takes one person to be a bit lax or sloppy and the plants will suffer.0
