It's good for the first 5/10 minutes or so, then it's exactly just the same as having the blower on the coldest setting. Light comes on the button and everything.

Is it a simple case of getting it recharged? :undecided

Edit: It's a Focus

Update: Ok, got it recharged, and nothing. Went to Kwik Fit and their offer means it was free. :D

But still no air con. :(

When turning it on the revs don't increase when idling like it should. Apparently. Bloke at Kwik Fit says it could be the motor or something? Or maybe a fuse? I dunno. :undecided He said there are no leaks or anything.

Guess I'll have to take it into Fords. :(

OP, where abouts in the UK are you. I know your tag is southernscouser, but for a scouser anywhere below Birmingham is south..;)

Just I could suggest a garage to ask

    southernscouser,

I know it's a bit far from you, and not suggesting you take your car there.

Give Tremona in Southampton a call on 02380 775829 Tell them the problem and I am sure they will know the problem. If not, all you have lost is the cost of a call

surging can happen when the refrigerant is running low and so it doesn't evaporate and condense like it should until it builds up some pressure, then it drops again. depends what the car is worth to you you can either take it to a specialist, get it purged, pressure tested and the drier replaced and recharged, or if the car is quite cheap any you just want to keep the aircon going for a wee while longer you can buy a cheap UV torch off ebay and use it in the dark to look for leaks in the system and if there are no leaks just natural wastage or just a tint pinhole you can buy an aerosol can that contains R134a refrigerant, oil, and a sealer/seal rejuvinator, it has a pressure gauge and an attachment that clips on to the low pressure service port then you just discharge the can in to the system until the gauge tells you the system is at operating pressure. bigger leaks in metalwork like the condenser radiator or the pipework can be repaired with plumbers solder. I've repaired the aircon on many cheap old moneysaving luxury cars this way and it works a treat.
The downside to using the diy can is many aircon professionals refuse to work on a system that has had a sealer used as it stops them recycling the refrigerant and can clog their evacuation pump up if they are not careful so really this method should be kept for those who will either do all their own aircon repairs or as a last ditch on a cheap car that you will do without the air con if it does not work, but then again this is moneysavingexpert and I bet there are a lot of people running around in get out of debt cars with broken aircon and not wanting to spend the £300+ to get it fixed, which it often is as even a tiny bit of hose can cost over a hundred quid. nothing to lose then.

the cans are made by interdynamics, I get them out of maccess for around £17

    Gas leaks out over time,

BillTrac, how can someone diagnose the fault over the phone? MY aircon doesnt work. its the ???

Could be a sensor, could be low on gas, faulty fan ,switch.etc etc etc..
