Artifically Increasing a Hedge Height...?

I'm hoping there are some gardeners out there who could help me please?

I'm one of those unfortunate people with a troublesome neighbour, in the malicious and nosey sense.
In recent years, he has caused problems for many people in the street, including myself, and the police have been involved on a few occassions with various neighbours.
Because of this, I keep the hedge between our back gardens at 6ft high for the sake of my privacy. This week, the neighbour has cut the hedge down to 4ft high which means he can now sit in his kitchen and see straight into my garden.
I have been told by a friend in the police that this could be classed as criminal damage but I really don't want to go down that route because I don't want any contact with him.

If I had the money, I would rip the hedge up and install a 6ft fence, but until I have saved up enough for that, does anyone know of an economical way I can increase the boundary height to 6ft again but still access my side of the hedge to maintain it?

You are correct that the neighbour has done some illegal.

Anyway, you could do the following:

    (1) Install a new 6 ft fence on your side. You won't be able to take the original fence down if this is not your boundary. Check the title deeds - obtain online.

    (2) Install a boundary on top of the existing 4 ft fence.

    (3) Buy a 6ft gazebo and put the panel on the side to cover that fence.

    (4) Buy some tall conifers and cover the whole fence.

    (5) Send a new bill to them and tell them to replace the hedge!

Unfortunately, everyone now has a neighbour who are inconsiderate. The world has changed and these people (neighbours) need to wake up.

Remember to say thank you to people who help you out!

Also, thank you to people who help me out.

Plant Russian Ivy (also known as Mile a Minute) This grows incredibly fast and will cover the hedge and more in a season.

Get some 8ft green plastic covered metal netting supports - most garden centres have them. Stick them at 1ft intervals down through the hedge leaving 2ft standing above the hedge (i.e 6ft off the ground) and then get some of the really dense green netting - like this stuff http://www.gardening-naturally.com/acatalog/Windbreak_Shade_Netting.html and stretch it between the posts. This will screen your garden for the time being.

Then allow the hedge to grow back to its former height - matey now can't cut it back to 4ft because the metal posts will knacker his hedge trimmer leaving him a very long job with just shears.

Now, that is evil logic but I like it! Thank you!
His stalking of the women in the street is all on record with the police so I'm pretty sure they'd be ok with that too.

:rotfl: Others have tried things like that with him in the past, but he just keeps on going. He's getting on in years now though so hopefully quieter times ahead.

I like this a lot. Instead of that netting you could always go to the local Army surplus and get some camouflage netting
  • lived near a house where, in a fatal accident, a car came off the road and through a v tall hedge of conifers. exposing the whole garden (most of their garden was at the front of the hose). New conifers were planted but in the mean time suggestion above was used - metal poles and fine green plastic mesh - it worked very well.
