the price of eggs and where to sell

i know this isnt quite greenfingered, but with alot of us on the greenfingered board now having chickens... and some of us have more eggs than what we can eat/cook with. i thought i would be a good idea to find out where people sell them and how much they charge.

When i had chickens before i used to suppy a local person who cooks and then sells their produce in the local farmers markets. they used ot use the chicken and duck eggs for cooking.

at the moment i am wasting soooooooooo many eggs its a sin.

so i was going to make some posters to put up in work ( i get the general public coming into work every day) to see if i could sell some..

I dont know waht to charge for my eggs?

i know in different parts of the country prices vary so. it would be nice to know how much people charge..

so how much do you think i could charge for


1/2 doz chicken eggs

1/2 doz duck eggs

I think 90p per half dozen chicken eggs and £1.50 per half dozen duck eggs would be very fair! (used to work on a farm and that a rough average of the prices we charged)
Do you have a drive where you could pop a little sign or someone you could trade with.
I am so jealous btw!!!

If you have a supermarket near, what about just outside the gates?

My local farm charges £1.20 for 6 free range eggs, so when I sell mine, I do the same.
But you can buy 12 in the shops for that. Whatever people will pay, is I suppose the answer.

last time round ( a few years back i was charging £1 a dozen, and £1.50 a dozen for Duck eggs, but now the prices have gone up in general..

soooo i was thinking about £1.50 a dozen for chicken and £1 1/2 dozen for duck eggs.


do you know anywhere on the internet where you can get a free chicken type design flyer for the eggs?

i bought a load of egg boxes ( 300 of them) so these should last a while....lol...

oooo I'm jealous Whereabouts are you? I'd pop a sign at the end of the drive. When I can get to our local farmers market there is a couple of old boys theat sell free range eggs for around £1.60 per dozen, they are lovely (the eggs and the old boys I'd much rather buy from individuals than supermarkets. Sign at end of Drive - saying eggs in porch (or similar) or little box at end of drive way. Round Here (Exeter way) they go from 80p to £1 for half a dozen chicken and about twice that for duck eggs (yum yum). Very Jealous.. so want my bit of land with chickens (though OH has already told me I can't have ducks as they are too messy!!)

A guy at my work sells 6 chicken eggs for £1.50. And they all sell. I think it's because £1.50 doesn't sound like much and most people can never remember how much they cost in the supermarket.

I don't buy mine from him though, I get them from the local farm shop for £1.39 for 6. Which is still more expsnsive then most of the prices listed here!

I wish I had a garden big enough to keep my own chickens....

if it helps, organic free range at lidl is £1.25 for a box of 6 (these are medium)
The local market sells it for £1.20 for a box of 6.

Maybe you could do a bulk deal as well. I know my parents buy 30 eggs at a time (they eat a LOT of eggs) and they get a good deal on them.

IIRC selling eggs anywhere other than as gate sales requires other things. e.g. I think salmonella vaccs become requisite (not sure on that though) and you need to get a producer number (free, but essential). Eggs need to be given a best before date, and you cannot sell to caterers/food producers. You need to sell them in new boxes too, not reused ones.
