Virgin media contract change

Hi
I have just paid £49 for a HD virgin media box which will not cost me any additional to the £29 per month I pay for the xl tv channel pack.
I wad not told about a contract change which I've just receive notice of essentially I will be tied into virgin media for 12 months unless I cancel soon. My concern is that once locked in and I've been with them for four years, they might up my monthly cost without any valid reason and I would be completely stuffed. Has anyone view on this or what they think of virgins price policy? I dnit gave broadband or phone just tv. Thanks
