My son has bought a laptop from his friend and the paid for subscription (Norton) is coming to an end. I have McAffee on my machine and can install it on his for free because I am not using all my licences. My question is should I?
I only ask because the other day on another thread some of you were saying that a free Avast, Avira or MSE would be better. Is that advice applicable in this case?

I wouldnt install Mcrappee myself
Make sure you use the Norton removal tool before installing whatever you decide on

I wouldnt inflict Mcrappee on my worst enemy, if your / his computer was a lung .. .. .. Mcrappee is the 20 stone fella sitting on your chest and restricting your ability to function.
I'd go with the excellent, unobtrusive, process-lite MSEDisclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. Everyones taken to MSE like ducks to water
But the Feb report on av compare shows it to be not too hot compared to Avira for example
Avira has 99.3% + for everything save malware (All the av programs seem to do poor with malware though)
MSE has 96.2% and above
Might not sound a lot, but in the world of trojans it could be classed as a HUGH gap:idea:0 -

I have put MSE on my lappy to give it a go and have almost forgotten it's there it's so trouble free!
Are you really saying it's not good enough?
I have mbam and SAS and CC which I run regularly too; please don't tell me I need to swap MSE! Please?:rotfl:0 -

Whatever AV you use, it is worth installing Imunet Project as well. This is a free web 2.0-based scanner that works alongside your regular 'install to machine' AV programs.
As for all those so-called virus certification bodies, just remember this, An AV program is only as good as it's last update.Never Knowingly Understood.

Each to their own flossy
Ive just posted what one particular test showed up (Which is also the most well made test I know of). Personally im sticking with Avira (with its really obtrusive daily popup)

Not me. I uninstalled my AVG free about 3 months ago (which had given me years of trouble free protection) because I was told that it was no good and MSE was better. I had MSE for less than 2 days and had to uninstall it due to my PC becoming so slow it was barely usable. Couldn't wait to get back to good old AVG.
Now have a brand new PC and it's got MacAfee pre-installed. Hope it's not as bad as you guys are saying as it came with a free 18 month subscription.0
