Replacing Gas Central Heating System

Options
Hi there,

We're just buying a house, and although it has a GCH system in place, this is very old (about 30 years old), so we were going to have it completely taken out (everything - boiler, radiators, tanks, etc...) and replaced with a new system with a combi boiler. We're try to figure out what the rough cost for this kind of job would be.

A bit of info on the house. It is a mid-terrace 2 bedroom house. It currently has 5 radiators, and we're looking to stick to the same number.

Would appreciate an idea of cost and how long this kind of project would roughly take from anyone in the trade or someone who's had a similar job done recently.

Thanks,
Bella

Good morning: cost will be dependent on your location in the UK and the standard of the specification. Savings can be achieved by retaining the existing pipework and radiators...has it been suggested by a pro that you replace the entire system?

    Hi Canucklehead,

Thanks for your reply. We're in West Sussex, so South-East. It hasn't been suggested that we replace the whole system, but the radiators look in quite bad condition, I don't know about the pipes.... I guess we're trying to get an idea of what it should cost as a worst case scenario.

Hi...the rads might just be 'cosmetically challenged' but functional. The pipework shouldn't be an issue if it is 15/22mm, two pipe system and in copper. You are in a pricier part of the world labour wise but overall costs will be lower if the works can be completed when the property is vacant.

A RGI, after conducting a site survey and discussing your requirements, would be best placed to advise..in other words you need to get someone in.;)

might be worth flushing out the existing system, then ditch the Rad's & Valves, tanks etc, then swap to combi set up but retain the majority of the original copper pipework, and save yourselves some cash

If your existing rads are past their sell by date then the odds are your copper will be too (adding a new boiler onto existing pipework can create pressure issues, and the joints can go which causes a leak)

Between 3k and 4k depending on house size, and choice of boiler would be a fair estimate. BG will charge more :D

Hi there, I am in sussex too, also a 2 bed terrace with no heating at the moment. I am paying 3400, for a combi, all pipework, 5 rads, new water main pipe, thermastatic valves and a independant controller. Then there is a £700 rebate so £2700. Hope that helps.

Pawpurrs - any chance I could get some info from you about who's doing your work and if you're happy with them?

    Thanks,

Just paid £1950 for a new Vailant Eco system boiler, 10 TRV's and lock shields, replacement room stat, programmer, magnaclean, cylinder stat and motorised valves plus new pipe work around the motorised valves.
Rads would be £50-100 each depending on size.
