Is anyone using a Virgin sim on their iPhone - does it work OK?
We get free calls to Virgin mobile phones from our Virgin land-line. They told me if I use my basic Virgin PAYG sim in an iPhone, without adding a data package, surfing/getting email etc. would be expensive. This isn't an issue as I only use the home computer for data stuff.
I love the iPhone's simplicity, so would I lose any other important features by not being on 02 and would I still be able to get some free wi-fi, albeit less availability of locations?
What are your experiences please?

You can use a virgin sim but you will need an unlocked iphone to use it.
TBH its not wise not having a data package as nearly every icon on the phone trys to connect to the internet.Theres no free wifi and the only thing you get with O2 but not others is visual voice mail.

If you're not going to use the iPhone for data, I'd go into the setting and change them to rubbish. There are reports of iPhone 'doing their own thing' without the owners knowing. If it goes online on its own you 'could' end up with a huge bill. . .0

Firstly, I've used various operators simcards in my iPhone and had no issues at all. So don't let anyone try and upsell you some fancy iPhone tariff.
You can also turn off data connections in the phone, and as the user says above.. potientally just change mobile web internet settings so it has no hope in hell.
The wifi will still work though.0 -
Hi
I recently tested a modified Virgin Mobile sim on my iPhone and it worked no problem. I purchased a micro sim card cutter from eBay (£3 with free postage), and now I'm taking out a 30-day rolling contract with Virgin. Its loads cheaper and saves £££s as I'm a Virgin Media cable customer.
I spoke to a Virgin Mobile agent on their website chat system, I specifically asked if a micro sim could be provided, which they said 'no'. I then asked if it would ok to modify the contract sim card to fit my iPhone 4, they said it was ok to do this.
So now I've cancelled my O2 £35-a-month contract and I am getting a deal for £20.99 a month with 3000 x-net minutes, 3000 virgin-to-virgin mobile minutes, 5000 texts and 1gb mobile web a month.
Don't get me wrong - O2 have been great but if it saves me £15 a month and getting more usage I had no option to cancel with O2.
Even the O2 customer service agent said they can't match the deal I'm getting with Virgin and even offered to keep my number.
I'll definitely go with O2 next time.
I've also been reliably informed that the iPhone 5 is due out on 7 or 14 October 2011 - so I could always sell my iPhone 4 and buy the iPhone 5 sim-free from Apple and carry on using my new Virgin contract.
One step beyond......0 -
PS if you bought your iPhone with O2 on contract or PAYG they will unlock it FREE on their website. Just search 'O2 unlocking form' on Google. Unfortunately the link cannot be poster here..
you can use this for all O2 handsets0
