unusually google hasn't bought much up at first attempt, apparently its very straightforward to upgrade the hard drive for a larger sized one (certainly in the older non-HD ones), can't find anything about enabling it as a PVR for Freesat channels after ending a sub..... you definitely own the box so seems a bit off Sky get to 'vandalise' if for you just cause you've terminated your contract with them once its come to an end....

oh, apparently the general advice is to unplug it before you cancel and leave it that way for a while so it avoids the 'kill' transmission from Sky, only a temporary fix tho.... and no clear guidance on how long a 'while' is.....

Ouch, I had never actually worked it out.

Thanks for cheering me up, when you say it like that it's a lot of money over the years.:(

Perhaps the box isn't that expensive over a year...

The point is, the box is free for life (well, for the life of the box anyway) after the one off payment.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Pull out your viewing card, the channels that you can still view are the free ones.
E4 and More4 though free used to require the presence of the viewing card.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

Does anyone know if I still get the regional channels for the BBC, BBC Wales etc??

In theory, when you cancel, SKY should downgrade your existing viewing card to a FreesatFromSky card which would keep your regionalised channels.
Now, they may not do this and try to get you to pay £20 for a another card. To be honest I'm not sure what their latest policy is, but it used to be that the old card would work just fine.

The card is what regionalises the channels. Without it you get BBC London on 101 and ITV Central on 103. Depending on where you live you may also lose FIVE.
The BBC regional channels are all in the high 900's and your regional ITV and FIVE can be added in manually, though they won't have an EPG.

no need, but make sure you cancel in writing. I did it over the phone and after four years they are still chasing me for the "free" month they gave me as an inducement to stay
