So I can't just reduce my sky subscription to freesky, I will need to cancel it completely and start again with free sat? Thanks

If you cancel your Sky subscription, your viewing card (provided it is the new white one and not the old blue one) will automatically become a FreesatFromSky card and you will need no further equipment.

Whether you prefer the channel lineup of Freesat or Freesat from Sky is your choice.

There's no connection, you can have Freesat and Freesat from Sky on the same dish if you wanted to (though not much point really), you just need sufficient feeds and a separate box for each platform.

Okay, thank you - I've got it now! Thanks for your patience!

Just one other thing - there are two Humax boxes on amazon - a 500gb (£290) and a 350gb (£231.97) (it looks like only the 500 does series link, but I'm not 100% about that).

The one that is reduced in Argos doesn't have any details about the hard drive, but I'm assuming it is the smaller one.

I am thinking I might as well get the best one I can afford as after a year or so of not paying sky subs, it will have paid for itself.

Does the above sound about right? (Before I commit myself to the purchase!)

The Humax PVR Freesat box is available direct for £215 if you are happy to take a 'grade A' model. I too would recommend this machine

Choose the largest hard drive available. Remember that if you are recording in HD then it uses approx twice the disk space of SD.

For the folks thinking of dropping Sky when the subscription runs out and using it for Freesat, you will lose your ability to record unless you pay Sky £10p/m.

Hence the discussion above about the Humax freesat box :-)

If anyone is interested, I just phoned sky to cancel and they offered me 6 months at £10 per month (I'm on the basic package plus Sky1).

I have cancelled anyway, as my sky plus box is a tad tempermental so I think freesat is the way to go, for me, but anyone who is unsure might want to think about that.

Both the Humax boxes do series link by the way.
There's also some confusion in this thread about the Freesat channel lineups. Cancelling your Sky subscription leaves you with freesatfromsky which does NOT have the same channel lineup at Freesat. Check the very useful links in post #13 to see the difference, and remember that Freesat has HD too.
