Had anyone been dining or working at the table, or had a child or pet been beneath the table,
serious injury could have been caused.

But there was not so it doesn't matter.

  • In July of this year our glass dinning table exploded into thousands of fragments. the dinninroom which measues 12' by 10' was covered in glass from corner to corner. Glass was found in our living room as the french doors were open. Had trhe patio door been open it would have extended out onto the patio. The high street shop freom which bought the table provided a full refund. but have failed to undertake an enquiry as to why this would have occurred. in fact the retailer contacted the manufacturer who stated that the table would noy have been faulty as any maufacturing defect woulf ave presented its self within the first few days of normal use or during assembly.
Consequently the inference is that I must have done something to cause this tio appen and have pretty muc tried to was there hands of this. To those that have that have attempted to be funny. I would say this unless you have experienced this and seen first and the devisatation which resembles the aftermath of an explosion O f which I have witnessed had any living thing been in that room they would have been cut to ribbons imagine your close ones in that room

Spontaneous glass breakage is known issue with tempered glass, and as far as I know there is no real way for manufacturers to completly prevent it. It happened with a glass shower screen we had while my wife was showering... that was a fun trip to A&E

Had there been no walls, and the fridge was open, and the lid off the milk, it could have gotten into the milk!!!:rotfl:
  • Leory, given they also mentioned the dimensions of the dining room and that glass got into the living room, perhaps they were saying that to illustrate the force with which it shattered - not what 'might have happened'.

I don't know why people are being so nasty on this thread. The OP has posted a problem that they want to make people aware of yet most of the comments are really not necessary.

To go back to the comments about "it's as well there were no young children or animals about" - no-one is saying kids or pets are more important just that they are the most susceptible in this situation. I could just imagine trying to get my toddler or dog to stand perfectly still while I fetch the hoover and clear up the glass yet ask an adult to do the same and there would be no problems.

As for all the whatifs such as "the glass could have gone onto the patio" - how easy is it to clear up shards of glass when they're outside? Inside you can hoover and you have defined boundaries as to where the glass could have gone. Outside it could go anywhere and I'm sure most people wouldn't take their hoover out to clear it up so if you have pets they could get their paws cut to ribbons.

I'm amazed at all the people who've come out of the woodwork with exploding glass tables all of a sudden!

Its an epidemic. Mind you, a glass table busting at 4am? That would have s**t me right up, burglars, aieeeeeee, run, leave the children, save the silver etc.
  • I once had a large pane of glass in a door that seemed to spontaneously shatter. The glazier told me that it had probably received an earlier knock that had somehow stressed the glass so that it only appeared to be a completely spontaneous event. He suggested a bird may have flown into the door. Is it possible that the table was bounced around in a delivery van/warehouse or some other similar scenario?

I'm glad nobody was hurt in your case.

This issue was discussed today on the Jeremy Vine show on radio 2. It was very interesting to hear that this is happening to so many people and the excuses the retails are coming up with to distance blame

    How weird.

I caught the end of this on the Jeremy Vine show and thought it had only ever happened to me.

A couple of years ago I had a TV stand/unit thingy for the DVD/Sky box etc with a glass door.

I was in the kitchen and heard a loud 'pop' from the lounge, walked in and found the door had exploded all over the floor. The glass had broken into hundreds of irregular pieces, all about the same size and been thrown across the room with some force. Scary as my youngest was still crawling around the floor fascinated by the glass.

Anyway, no one got hurt, cleaned it up, and lived with a doorless cabinet until very recently.

Just thought it was one of those things.
