what to do with cream carpets

I have cream carpets and was really surprised when someone came round to clean them how beautifully they came up. Equally I've heard of impressive results with the Rug Doctors.
The house I rented before have cream carpets that had been stain-guarded and it really worked! I spilled a whole glass of red wine all over the carpet and it came off a treat. I'm not sure if it's cost effective or even possible to stain-guard once they're fitted, but it might be worth looking at?0
