Data protection issues.

Options
I have worked for my company for over 12 years, they have recently asked us for I.D to prove we are legal to work in the U.K.
I have no issue with this.
My issue is the fact that my manager is displaying photocopies of passports, n.i cards and birth certificates on the wall outside the office so any member of staff and site visitors can see them.
I am very concerned about identity theft,am I being unreasonable asking for my details not to be displayed.

They are out of order doing that and are probably breaking some law, regarding data security, confidentiality amongst others, Tell management to take them down PDQ. They have likely had a phone call from immigration who will fine a company if they cannot prove they have checked their employees right to work, even if said employee was with them from leaving school 25 years ago.

The problem is that many people who are UK nationals do not possess suitable ID to prove their right, as if someone does not have a photo driving licence or a passport, a UK birth cert and NI number, bank account etc is insufficient proof to prove your right to work under the Asylum and Immigration Act. So if they do a check now and you haven't the proof required they will have to sack you to avoid a big fine. Crazy isn't it! Before I get trolled, I tried to register with several agencies and was told that as I hadn't a current passport, they needed a "Certificate of Naturalisation" (same as an immigrant gets on taking up citizenship & costs £900 ish I believe) as proof of my right to work in the UK.

OMFG! This is your personal data. It is meant to be kept securely and confidentially. Tell him to take it down now and lock it away in a personnel file. If he won't do it. do it yourself. If he needs to prove your entitlement to work then he will just have to go the cabinet to get the copies. Jesus what a jerk!! Absolutely gobsmacked

Likewise I totally cant get my head around what sort of thinking would lead to this!!!

Not fit to be a data controller- understatement of the year!!!

And while you are telling him to take it down, suggest he follows this link to ICO-DPA site and reads and learns:

    The basics?
The Data Protection Act gives individuals the right to know what information is held about them. It provides a framework to ensure that personal information is handled properly.
The Act works in two ways. Firstly, it states that anyone who processes personal information must comply with eight principles, which make sure that personal information is:
    • Fairly and lawfully processed
    • Processed for limited purposes
    • Adequate, relevant and not excessive
    • Accurate and up to date
    • Not kept for longer than is necessary
    • Processed in line with your rights
    • Secure - displayed on a wall no matter where the wall is, is never ever ever secure
    • Not transferred to other countries without adequate protection
