You're right - there's not really a place for queries like this. I'll move it to the Ebay board, as it's fallen from the front page of OS. The experts there are proerly clued up on postage so will be best able to help you
    thanks for that, very helpful!
Out of curiosity, what sort of mail do you get at home which you need at uni every month? Can't you just pick it up when you go home for visits / holidays? Or is it something important? Because if it's important, maybe you could speak to the sender of the mail about changing your address to your term time one? It would save hassle for both RM and your family who are forwarding all your mail.
To be honest it's not really about me getting my letters delivered to university, it's worked for the past 3 years, and I'm about to graduate so won't be changing anything now. I more want to know what the official / unofficial policy is, so that I know in future for myself and to advise others on the matter. The fact that I was told by one employee that they would deliver post up to 3 times for the price of postage, and then by another that postage paid is only for delivering once, and that anything further you have to pay again, seems odd. Does this imply that there is no policy / the policy has recently changed?

Also that my (forwarded) post has been stopped by revenue protection and passed without charge in the past, but now has been stopped and an unpaid deficient postage fee been added seems strange.

Thanks for your advice, but this service is not appropriate as they redirect by surname. Using this service would mean I would receive letters addressed to any member of my family.

Even if this was not the case, I wouldn't want to be spending £7 per month to have 5 letters a month re-directed. It would be far cheaper to stick on a new stamp.

    where to start

for starters,of course you can redirect mail for one person
the mail is redirected by name
so if you give them your full name/initials then thats what gets redirected

this is a bit of a bugbear of mine
people seem to think that RM should provide a service for free for some reason
rather interesting at a time when the privitisation of RM has raised its head yet again

why do people feel mail should be redirected for free?
more so when RM often make a loss on downstream access mail, why do people then think its fine that RM should lose more by having to rehandle and redeliver these items?
Also that my (forwarded) post has been stopped by revenue protection and passed without charge in the past, but now has been stopped and an unpaid deficient postage fee been added seems strange

this is a naive delivery postie risking their job to save you money

so the costs just ramp up as revenue protection have handled the mail as well
you say you have done it for 3 years.
so thats £252 in redirection revenue lost to RM?

I'm sure someone in the know will be along to confirm this... but when I moved out they redirected my name only (ie not the rest of my family!!) - not sure why you thought otherwise?
  • Just to confirm, its not by surname.

When filling out the form, it asks if it's for the whole household, or for just one person. You then fill in the name/names you want redirected, and only their post is redirected.

Have done this three times now, no mistakes so far!

ok, I only thought this because on the link to RM given above, under "prices" it says "per surname", so I assumed this was the only way you could get the service. Thanks for clearing that up.

I don't think mail should be redirected for free - an employee at my local sorting office said that Royal Mail mail will be delivered up to 3 times for the price of a stamp. This is an extra service so that people don't have to pay twice when forwarding on mail - it is included in the price of the stamp. i.e. if 1 in every 40 letters in forwarded on, 1p from the 41p it costs for a stamp will pay for that letter to be re-directed. Similar to the principle behind insurance.
As the same employee also told me, third party mail, eg UK Mail, will not be forwarded on, as they only pay a small amount (9p?) in the first place. This seems completely reasonable.

that's not true - are you implying revenue protection put a fee onto the letter, and the postie just delivered it anyway? That wasn't the case. Letters forwarded to me have been through revenue protection and passed, without a fee being added.

how do you base that your letter has been through revenue protection?

what your RM employee and sorting office(there havent been 'sorting' offices for years, its a delivery office) is tosh
contact RM and get them to explain the 'three delivery rule'
    it doesnt exist
there is no such thing as an unofficial redirection
yes RM are lax in enforcing the charging of these items but the fact is forwarded/redirected mail should be paid for
if 1 in every 40 letters in forwarded on, 1p from the 41p it costs for a stamp

this is a classic,so despite RMs prices being regulated and often the 1st delivery of a letter is done at a loss, you feel theres space for you to get mail redelivered for free?

    as for this line

there was a revenue protection sticker / stamp on it, yet no fee to pay sticker - I don't remember exactly as it was a while ago, and I wouldn't want to guess what it said as you might pick me up on my incorrect terminology again!

It seems unlikely that a RM employee will have made up this rule...?! Maybe it's something they've introduced since you've stopped being a postie...

no, as I said previously, letters such as UK Mail which are delivered by RM for a low fee shouldn't be forwarded on for 'free'.
the RM worker that I spoke to said that mail redelivery of RM postage is included in the price of postage, not free. I hope you see the difference.

Shoplifting is illegal, I'm sure there is no law against re-directing mail!
Anyway, I hope you realise my original comment was said tongue-in-cheek!
