Yeah, thats more or less how I've been working it. Food/drink are deductable. Groceries/petrol are taxable.
There are some things that get bought solely for MSing but I include them as taxable as it keeps the difference clear and the tax isnt that much anyway. I personally dont want the taxman prying into my affairs for the sake of a few quid.
I'm really glad this discussion has come up as I've been meaning to clarify these things, and I think I get most of it now!
Now I'm confused about expenses that aren't taxable, though. So far I've just put all buying expenses in one column, up to the limit of the reimbursement. But does this mean I ought to have two such columns, one for stuff I can claim tax relief on and another for things I can't claim on?I'm broke, not poor. Poor sounds permanent, broke can be fixed. Also, just reading the 'egg shop' instructions and came across this interesting paragraph:
All products/items purchased as a requirement of the job that are not required to be returned to Head Office should bethe cost can be reimbursed as an 'expense' and not form part of taxable income.
destroyed by the researcher or donated to a registered charity. This is in line with Inland Revenue legislation in order that
I'm sorry, but I'd rather pay tax on something and get some use out of it than give it away, and I'd never just *destroy* something if it could be useable to *someone*! That's terrible advice!I'm broke, not poor. Poor sounds permanent, broke can be fixed. (Thoroughly Modern Millie)

I have to say, I think I prefer your way of doing things in general - because it's simpler, if nothing else!I'm broke, not poor. Poor sounds permanent, broke can be fixed. (Thoroughly Modern Millie)
