I am totally pants at this cos I wanted to quote Flygirl, but ended quoting myself!

How many of you give to a charity shop because you believe in the casue - NO MATTER WHAT! If you believe in charity shops, you give to the one that you believe in MOST - no matter what. Its not the customer service that is being assessed here, but where the money is going. Am I right or am I wrong? I am going to bed now, (dont think I'm ignorant) but will def look at the posts tomorrow.

Personally I have no qualms doing these. Having been a volunteer in the past I have no issues about being mystery shopped. I would be pleased to know that I was giving good service

I appreciate everything any charity tries to do but feel they are a business and as such there should be checks. I would like to know that my bric a brac donations or clothes get sold for a fair price and not scooped up in a volunteer’s bag...a practise I have seen and dislike intensely.

Most of the MS’s I have carried out don't expect you to comment on volunteers (unless they are rude or cause a really bad health and safety). They do expect you to comment on the stock layout and cleanliness. This should be good because it will attract more customers.

Charity shops are big business now.

A lot of their merchandise is new stock and has to be displayed as per a planogram and they want to know it is promoted correctly to maximise the proifits.

They also expect their volunteers to ask customers if they are tax payers as they generate futher donations from the tax office. I was in a shop the other day (not an MS) and a customer came in with some bags of donations. When he went her colleague said "You didn't ask him if he was a tax payer" She said " I never do...all those bloody forms to fill in!" She losses the charity money with every customer she serves!
Average out her hourly loss and times it by all the others that do the same and I can see a much bigger pile of wasted money than a Mystery Shopping contract.

    Charities are a business.

Sales in Charity shops increase if the store is well presented. That goes for the staff serving as well. We all have our personal favourites for many reasons and that’s why we spend money and donate to them.

Whilst we want as much as possible to go to the people who ultimately benefit there are inevitable costs involved.

A service is a service and whether you are a paid employee or a volunteer it should be monitored.

Some of you may have read this elsewhere....I have another alter-ego!

Did anyone else watch the "Mary, Queen of Charity Shops" series on TV ?

A few adjustments would double or triple the weekly take at a charity shop. Checking that these changes are having an effect and being adhered to will maintain these much higher takings. The cost of MSing the shops is a small price to pay if the takings at the shop are doubled or tripled!

I agree though, that some of the directors of charities are vasty overpaid.

My bank account says that the payment from the company that cannot be named will be cleared into my bank account on Monday. I bank with HSBC and it has a facility that tells you which payments are pending into your account. Unfortunately nothing from Helion yet.

I have an old friend in Australia (who I dont speak to anymore due to the fact that I don't agree with her work ethic). She works for a childrens charity in upper management and gets loads of free holidays (business trips she calls them) to Vietnam and India and other Asian counties. She says that the money needs to be used up for tax reasons so she gets to have a jolly with her work colleagues about once every three months. No work is done. It's all shopping and drinking. Hence, I never, ever give money to charity. Only old clothes etc.
