Vitamin C and Bread

  • Hi,

I've got a Morphy Richard Fastbake for Christmas - not bought a loaf from the shop since!

Quick question - where do you buy the Vit C tablets for the brown bread from? I've only seen 1000mg tablets, I used half a one in a loaf today and there was a definite hint of orange!

I normally just do 75% white to 25% brown flour but I would prefer a 100% brown loaf.

P.S. Pink Winged could you please merge this with the right thread, I noticed on another thread that the search wasn't working.

  • Tesco value vitamin c tablets have no orange flavouring added to them. But if you save the water from cooking potatoes then you don't need the tablets it makes lovely brown bread picked up that tip from this board I think it was squeaky who posted it:confused: .

You can also buy powdered vit c from any pharmacy - you just need to ask for it. I think mine was less than £1 when I bought it for a large tub. Thats all I use rather than the tablets.

    Hi MadDogWoman,

Thank you for trying to search. :A

There is another thread on where to find vitamin c for breadmakers (that squeaky found) that may help, so I'll add your thread to it.

  • Just to repeat -why bother with it ? I've never used vitamin c in all my years of breadmaking. It isn't in the yeast I use either.

    Hi Thriftlady,

I'm new to bread machines so I though it would be best to follow all the recipes word for word the first few times I try them so I have an idea what the loaf should be like before I start playing with the recipe.

Where I have seen a difference is from a tip posted some time ago.

Next time you boil potatoes save the water. You can freeze any extra in portions.

Don't worry about bits of tater in it - in fact you can odd the odd dollop of left over mashed if you like.

Use this to make your bread with.

Free - and a virtually limitless supply :)

Probably being a bit thick here, but what does it do?

Helps give you a nice soft well risen loaf :)

Especially when using value plain four instead of strong white flour, or when making a whole wheat or whole grain loaf.

Thanks squeaky. I might start using it then. It always seems a shame to pour it down the sink!
  • I have never even heard of this! We have just swapped our bread maker yeast from Allisons to dove farm, and have def noticed the difference it makes on wholemeal loaves though.
