The iphone 3GS my opinion

Hi all
I thought I just give the other side of the story of the iPhone.
I had a nokia e71 which was one of the best mobiles I have ever had. i was due for a upgrade back in November. As I my contract was on a o2 business contract I was limited to what I could choose. I waited for 4 months & was given the same choice of handsets when i orginally took out my e71 (rubbish o2!). It was obvious that o2 did not want to sell any other handset other than iPhone. So I decided to go with the iPhone 3GS 16gb and see what the fuss was about.
I was surprised at first to see how small the box was. There was no plastic protective cover on the screen, pouch or a cloth to clean with!
I then hooked it up with my PC to get my music on it. I never had a ipod before and really struggled. In the box they had a link from where you had to go to install iTunes, I tried for 30 mins to load the page before giving up & then downloading from Cnet.com instead. I did a IT degree but felt really dumb that I could not get the iTunes to sync my music! After spending a couple of hours I gave up with iTunes & I decided to install a 3rd party software instead & managed to get my music on it!
I have now had the iPhone for 3 months & dislike the following things:
Battery life is really poor, no I mean really poor!
No video calling function
Cannot multifunction
Poor camera
Cannot delete or change track details without having to go through iTunes
iTunes is not very user friendly
No installation CD
Basic pakaging & extras in box considering how much you are paying.

Don't get me wrong it is a nice bit of kit, i like the touch screen, the apps & look of the mobile however I think all you iPhone lovers are getting robbed for what you are paying (£45 per month!) or maybe I have been spolit by Nokia all these years?
I have made my mind up & will get rid of it as soon as (will try to swap for Nokia n900 or n8).

Does anyone else agree with my opinions?

I'm sorry to say you are truly addicted to Nokia

I'm using a Nokia E71, and to be fair it was a brilliant piece of kit when it was launched back in 2008 August, I've got within 3days of launch. It was even compared against iphone and rated as the best phone by many technology pod casts and websites.

But that was then, now 21 months down the line I'm really struggling with E71, especially the software it feels so antique now, to make things worse I bought an ipod touch about a year back and it just blows me away. I never stopped playing with it, the interface and usability is so brilliant I just want to bin my E71.

I know itunes takes a bit of getting used to but once you done that its the best music and content management software out there. The only catch is you need to have decent laptop or Pc with at least 2gb of ram to run itunes properly. Anything less than that will slow the pc down.

Have you ever tried putting music into E71 its a nightmare, Nokia's crappy phone manager is so difficult to use and if you drag n drop any files to e71, you can't even find it anywhere on the phone. and the phone's music player is good for nothing. And E71 comes with the worst possible headset.

Nokia's time is well and truly over, they are surviving merely because of the volume of phones they are selling and the 1000's of models which no one can differentiate. and if you want to go back in time good luck Nokia will be the best bet, and if you are interested in just a phone phone that will work as well.

But in this day and age, smart phones are the norm and iphone is the one you need to get.

I'm waiting for the new iphone which is releasing next month and I have to carry on using E71 until then, and thats it I'll never ever use a Nokia anymore, they are history now, no one wants to own a Nokia any more.

i have to disagree with your opinion of the iphone,i have had a 3g for 18 months and now a 3gs.
i took them out of box connected to itunes and found it to be a breeze to activate and load stuff on.
a lot easier with the 3gs as itunes library was already up and running so just a case of loading firmware on and restoring from a back up,all text messages, music emails etc were then on new phone same as the old one.
even when i first got it did not have any problems setting it up it took longer to download itunes than it did activating the phone.

it took me a while to fully understand what you can do with itunes but i do find it to be fairly user friendly.
i have had various phone makes and types previously and in my opinion the iphone is better all round than my previous handsets,i do agree with you that it has got downfalls like no multi tasking, and poor camera.
however i find the other things you can do with it make up for it,especially if it is jailbroken you then have loads more options open to you.for example proswitcher and backgrounder to multitask.
the battery is poor on them especially if you watch films/tv or surf net a lot,i have extra battery attachment and charge every night so does not cause me any major problems.
you do not need installation cd all info and downloads are available on tinternet from apple.
also not all contracts are £45 a month
just my opinion after nearly 2 years with iphone

Battery - Being upgraded in the new iPhone 4
Video calling function - Included in the new iPhone 4
Multifunction - Coming to iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 thanks to iPhone OS 4.0 (coming in summer) Although iphones have always been able to multifunction amazingly well thanks to a jailbreak app called backgrounder so nothing new here other than the way its being implemented.
Poor camera - Being upgraded in the new iPhone 4

iPhone 4 is being announced on 7th June and will be on sale sometime next month.

I have had an 8gb iPhone and have just upgraded to a 32gb model.
When our contract was due for an upgrade, I went for the Blackberry 9700 curve. It was a fantastic phone but unfortunately my fingers were too clumsy for the keypad. I sent it back and got another iPhone.

It is so intuitive to use, why would anyone need an instruction book?
The battery life isn't the best but you can squeeze more life out of it if you turn off wi-fi, emails and some other toys.
The choice of apps is amazing.
My one criticism would be with iTunes. It is slow, clunky and takes too long to put songs on.

All in all though, I still think its the best all round phone on the market

From the price point of view I completely agree. Apple are experts at pitching the iPhone as a 'Premium product' at a premium price, yet providing less than premium features.

I'm lucky enough to use and test a wide range of smartphones on a daily basis, so I get a good feel of how well devices work in different scenarios.

Granted, the user experience, looks, application choice and ease of use are right up there, but iTunes, hardware specifications and poor battery leave alot to be desired for a 'premium' smartphone.

In my opinion, what you're really paying for is the Apple name and a nice, simple experience. However, I find it difficult to justify such a high overall cost for what's being offered.

It will be interesting to see how the iPhone 4G fares. In the US, there will be a hot battle with the HTC Evo 4G.

The iphone can't and wont truly multitask. Take the Palm Pre for example, you can have all the apps open at the same time and just flick between them and they all if applicable share information between them.

Most of the things the iphone can do other phones already do, video calling and some have a better camera than what the iphone will have. As above Apple are very good at making their product wanted even if others can do it better and cheaper. The battery on a smartphone will always be poor though with what the user will ask it to do. Take the apps and itunes away and the iphone is no different, having said that the Pre can sync with itunes. The Pre has 8gb of memory but i think that the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus are out next week with better software and a bigger 16gb of memory and wished i held on for a few months so i could get one. I was always a Sony Ericsson fan before i took on the Pre. HTC do make some great phones, my brother has the Nexus One and it is very good.

Apple's packaging is minimalistically beautiful IMHO. Really cleverly designed.

What extras were you thinking of? You get a mains charger/sync cable.

Well having recently converted from Nokia to iphone...

All i can say is... "where has this phone been all my life"

I don't care about multitasking, it's another battery draining issue!

iTunes.. easy peasy, especially on my imac (no i'm not a fanboi :p)

Fair enough the battery isn't brilliant, but then neither was the N series range from Nokia. Also Nokia's software was terrible!
:exclamatiTo the internet.. I need to complain about something!

Can't argue with the comments about Nokia. They really have issues with both hardware quality and the Symbian S60 OS. I've had a few N series as personal devices now and although very rich in hardware they've been pretty slow and unreliable. Soft resets are a daily occurrence.

    Yes you are...

    ________

If you want a phone for texting, calling, and the occasional game (and have £500 to spare), and think 'Flashing' is what a torch does, Great! Go for the iPhone.

If you want true customization, a better battery life, and the ability to do so much more with your handset, go for something like the HTC HD2, or the HTC Desire.

Don't get me wrong... I like the iPhone - it looks good, and some of the games are alright (I own an iTouch), but I don't have £500 to spend on a handset every time I renew. But in the end, it's up to the consumer to make the choice and not me.
