Atlantic, is it the cheapest?

I was advised by MSE member Masonic, that Atlantic raised their prices in January. Will they be increasing in 5 months time? Are we better leaving Powergen and going for one which increased their price more recently?

I notice that others in the group ( Scottish and Southern Energy , Southern Electric, SWALEC and Scottish Hydro-Electric) have also got very good prices but are more expensive than Atlantic.

I have just compared my running cost on four sites!

energylinks.co.uk Saving 0.148%
ukpower.co.uk Saving 3%
simplyswitch Saving 3.4%
energyhelpline Saving 15%

I am on Powergen energy online - pre Dec 2005. Only energylinks.co.uk let me give that information. Energyhelpline did let me choose energy online, but not pre Dec 2005.

Can any body explain these differences in prices?

Hi.I am with Atlantic, and they raised their prices in january and then again in May.They have guaranteed not to raise them again this year and i find when comparing them on the sites, that they are one of the cheapest in my area.

I was with powergen and they got quite expensive.I would have changed to powergen energy online but they wouldn't let me!! They said i had to leave them then return ,well sorry but that is just farcical so they have lost me for good now.

I do believe that Atlantic are actually part of the Scottish and Southern energy group but not sure why they have differing prices.maybe it depends on the region you come under?

This is true and Atlantic tariffs are not actually available in every region.

Atlantic also pay out an annual rebate of one month's average spend (equivalent to an 8.5% discount) and this is included in the savings quoted at the Energyhelpline (hence the large % savings). However, if you don't stay with them for 12 months, you won't get it.

I have just had a reply from Powergen re their increase in prices. I give them below. I am away for a couple of weeks, so I will do my own check on the prices of other companies when I get back.

"Thank you for contacting us regarding our recent price increase, below is a breakdown of your current prices and what they will be after 4 September 2006.

Currently your gas tariff is 3.006 pence for the first 4572 KWH you use each year, after using this amount of gas the price drops to 2.390 pence per KWH

From the 5th September your unit rates will change to 3.559 pence for the first 4572 KWH you use each year and 2.830 pence for every KWH used after this amount.

Currently your Electric tariff is 13.880 pence per unit for the first 900 units used each year, after using this amount of electric the price drops to 8.480 pence per unit.

From the 5th September your unit rates will change to 16.650 pence for the first 900 units you use each year and 9.330 pence per unit for every unit used after this amount.

I hope that is clear for you to make comparisons with other companies, any further queries please contact us via email or by telephone on 0800 363 363."

We've been with atlantic for both gas and electricity for 3 years, and have just switched the electricity (the gas was still cheapest) as they are no longer the cheapest in our area funnily enough British Gas were the better option.... We've never had any problem getting our cash back, they just pay it straight into the bank...I've had to chase them with regard to over estimating bills, but had to do that with our last supplier so just take it as par for the course...Overall we've never had any complaints with them, and until recently always came up cheapest.

finally managed to get this years rebate after writing to them with copy of original sign uo and t+c's - got a nice call from cs apologising for delay and sure enough in account today - their explanation for delay was - they pay rebate at end month 13 after you have been with them for complete year so i sign in june and got rebate july in year 1 - they then count 13 months from previous rebate and pay next ie august in year 2 then sept in year 3 and so on -seems like a 13 month rebate to me and not annual
