im going to the usa for 3 weeks on monday and rang orange to clarify about data roaming on my iphone, the lady i spoke to tried to sell me a data bundle (of course) but i dont plan on using the net, so know i need to turn off in settings. i wanted to know if using a voip app (mobilevoip)using 3g would use much mb (will it). she also told me that to use a free wifi hotspot i need to turn on my data roaming,,,is that true? i just tried it at home, turned the data roaming off and i was still connected to wifi. I want to use the mobile voip app or the skype app i have to make calls when in a wifi zone, but if i turn on the data roaming this will run up a bill if i get emails etc right? also,,i was going to turn my voice mail to direct, so when someone calls it goes straight to it, then access my voicemail using skype and my pin number but she said i get charged for the call even if it goes straight to voicemail.

there is said to be plenty of public wi-fi in USA, so you could use VoIP or browse internet or do your emails using that

switch off data roaming with Orange, and from things you read sometimes the iPhone manages some data use anyway, so I'd suggest you might edit the access point details slightly to something invalid

if you aren't going to receive calls using Orange, then divert all your calls unconditionally to voicemail before leaving the country; as long as you do it before leaving you won't be charged roaming costs for voicemail

If you're not going to use the phone part of the iPhone. Take the sim out and leave it at home would be the best solution. Saves you mucking about with settings and any accidental call/data charges. Then use WIFI when available to access the net and apps, etc.
