  • RECORDS TO BE SET AT NINE-DAY DEVIZES FOOD & DRINK FESTIVAL 17-25 May 2013

A record number of stall-holders, fun-filled events and entertainment for minds and palates is set to make the ninth Devizes Food & Drink Festival one of the most successful yet.

The nine-day Festival, a community event run by volunteers, is being held between 17-25 May 2013 in the charming historic market town of Devizes at the very heart of Wiltshire.

This established annual event provides an opportunity to showcase the wealth of wonderful food and drink produced locally, in the county, the South West and beyond.

The Festival is to be formally opened at a Gala Cocktail Evening on Friday evening (17 May) attended by the town’s Mayor, where guests will be able to try a selection of locally themed cocktails.
During the following week there will more than 30 special meals and functions including more than 11 talks and demonstrations, competitions for children and canal trips.

Three top chefs will head the line-up on the first full day of the Festival on Saturday 18 May. Leading UK food writer, Daily Telegraph columnist Xanthe Clay will be one of the team of chefs providing masterclass demonstrations. The demonstrations are a highlight of the Festival and take place in the historic Devizes Corn Exchange. Joining Xanthe will be Joseph Croan, the highly acclaimed former Head Chef at Marco Pierre White’s L’Escargot restaurant in London, and Chris Staines, one of the most respected chefs in the UK from the Allium Brasserie in Bath. Admission is free.

The Grand Market Fair, also on Saturday, has proved even more popular this year with a capacity forty-two exhibitors taking space with a variety of stalls offering everything from chillies to churros and cuisine machines to cup cakes. At the heart of this event will be the Festival’s main sponsor, award-winning butchers Walter Rose and Son, established in the town in 1847. The firm has a first class reputation supplying leading restaurants such as Tom Kerridge’s The Hand and Flowers at Marlow which holds two Michelin stars; Lucknam Park, Colerne and Purnell’s, Birmingham – both with a Michelin star. Walter Rose will be supplying the meat for the Chef’s demonstrations in the Corn Exchange. The Walter Rose marquee display will show the route of food from farm to table including animals and poultry.

During the following week there will be lectures and presentations on subjects from keeping bees and chickens, to catered boat trips along the famous Kennet and Avon Canal. Events for children that encourage healthy eating and exercise figure prominently, as do baking competitions for both children and adults.

Dine-arounds and pop-up restaurants and culinary evenings will offer visitors the opportunity to discover more about local and international food – everything from Bangladeshi to Sicilian, Austrian to English, Spanish to Greek – something for everyone.

A particular favourite is ‘Guest who’s coming to dinner’ – a popular evening when participants have a ‘mystery meal’ dining with total strangers at an hitherto unknown host’s home.

Details of all the events can be found on the Devizes Food & Drink Festival website along with booking details, in addition to a host of information, photographs and links to other key sites relating to Devizes and its diversity of food, tourism and history. Tickets for events can be obtained from Devizes Books in Sidmouth Street, Devizes.
