How do I get Orange to unlock my phone?

I have a Sony Ericsson W890, on an Orange contact for more than a year. I called customer services to ask them to unlock it for me, as I wanted to use another SIM in it whilst abroad. CS told me that I needed to take it into a store to get it unlocked.
So I take it into the Orange store, and get told that they don't unlock phones.."I've been here 7 years and never unlocked a phone", offering to point me to an independent retailer to unlock the phone for a charge.
I was under the impression that most networks will unlock the a phone that's been on contract.
- Is Orange an exception?
- Alternatively, are there free unlocking codes available for this phone?
TIA
Les

If the phone is out of contract then they should be able to give you the unlock code.

Keep phoning until you get someone that knows what they are doing.

CS 'should' have passed a request to get the unlock code. They always say it can take 14 days but it usually come through in a day or so. They charge 15 quid last time I had one done.

They get charged from the manufacture.

You may find a local phone shop would do it cheaper, 5 to 10 quid maybe. I'm not up on the cost for Sony's.
