Possible to have ADSL and cable at same time?

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone could help me.
I'm moving house on 1 July and phoned Sky to arrange them to setup broadband for when I move in.
Looking on their site it says the broadband will be activated on the 1 June, a month earlier than I want.

The current tenants at the house use Virgin for cable broadband/phone, and the Sky service is ADSL.

Would the two work side-by-side for that month (ie, if I just let the Sky ADSL broadband activate) without cutting off the existing tenants internet connection?

Cheers
Mark

Cable broadband does not go thru an ADSL phone line,it is entirely seperate & works differently, hency you cannot have ADSL broadband on a Cable line.
If the current tennant is useing strictly a cable service & does not have a BT phoneline, then you cant have Sky broadband (or any other broadband) without getting a BT line installed/activated.

  • The Sky people will be activating the BT line that goes into the house. If the BT line is activated does that mean it will not affect the existing tenants service which is strictly cable?

As Spike said they are different lines. Even if they were using the BT phoneline activatitng ADSL on it wouldn't do any harm as there is no signal from the exchange end until you connect a router at the premises.

There is something rather strange though - I don't see how they can activate a BT line unless there is a current phone contract on it. If that contract is in the name of the current occupants it will be de-activated when they cancel that contract.

You really need to brave the Sky CS and get this sorted out.
  • I'll be paying line rental to Sky too, so it'll all be going through them - line rental will be paid to them so does that explain the activation thing?

Ah - yes that could be it - they'll be getting the phone line and ADSL both up and running. Of course they'll want you to start paying for it too so it still may be worth a call although for the sake of £20 I think I'd give calling Sky CS a miss myself.

Anyway the cable phone line is different wires and the BB is coax so your phone line will have no effect at all on the cable installation.

Virgin do use the phone line to offer an ADSL broadband service, but only in areas that are non (coax) cabled.

That's pretty much irrelevant to what the question is about. The VM phone line is not used for ADSL only BT phone lines are.

The OP mentioned Cable broadband in his post, the service you are on about is Virgin National.

Quite a few people refer to VM's service as "Cable" even if it isn't, I was simply trying to account for general terms being used.

Assuming the OP has the coax in to the house though, then the two services are of course completely seperate.

Why did you ask for service to start on 1st june if you dont move in until 1st july...if bt need to visit the property to put a line in for sky will the current occupant let them in or tell then to go away...if they do let them in and fit the line ( or even if the line turns on without a visit), whats to stop them using your line from the 1st june to 1st july and racking up charges on your bill ?..on your point there is no connection between a VM cable line and BT (or anyone who uses BT lines) so just by ordering a BT/sky line wont somehow stop the VM line from working...the current occupant will have to contact VM to do that
