It saves putting the heating on to get stuff dried on the radiators (which always ends up being pulled off and put in the potato bin by my daughter..), and it does seem to do the job quite quickly.
Be interested to know if this really is as cost effective as I think, I hope so!!!

We have that amusing little habit too which is why the great long radiator in DD's room doesn't get used for clothes! Nathaniel is rather fond of heating so he has it on far more than I would. Irony is he's the one with 'surplus padding'!If you can't be a good example, be a dire warning

Seriously - they really do kick out alot of heat, try it - you will be suprised!
yes, they do - big towers do as well. we found that even when the temp started to dip, in october, we were fine in the living room (where lappy and puter tower are) cos of the heat coming off them.

I can't believe that we have made it until now without the central heating this year. Well done all who are plodding on. :T
I've nicked all the ideas of hanging sheets over doors, wardrobe doors mainly in our case as most bi-fold doors. Popping the airer in front of a sunny window or by the oven if cooking a casserole or similar and it won't be in the way.
All the old tricks such as shutting curtains as light going and draught excluders everywhere have helped enormously.
Just so relieved that I am 2/3 through my quarterly gas bill and still we are holding out. Facing the fact that we can't afford to use something we have no money to pay for makes me finally feel that we are really learning to live within our means. Thank goodness I found this site and had the wake up call.AUGUST GROCERY CHALLENGE £68.12/ £250

I know i managed to make it ot the beginnign of November wiht no heating adn was so relieved - ours is on a meter so its a case of if you run out your screwed. Had to put it on then though because little one had Bronchitus
Its still not on all the time now - just in blasts when it gets too cold adn im tryign to keep all the doors shut as much as i can - turned off radiators we dont use (bathroom one is the only one really) but i turn the hallway one off in the evening and put the bathroom one on because i hang all the drying in there ( clothes around the shower rail on hangers, airer around radiator dn a sock/underwear hanger on rail too) and because its only a small room it dries stuff quite quickly - which is always handy in a small flat.
Have learnt to never under estimate the power of a nice hot drink or cuppa soup. They can really warm you up and your hands when your sat holdign the mug - landed!Time to find me again0 -
Dear all old stylers:j and anyone else whos saving or economising their energy bills,i would just like to inform/tell you what happened to me this week by being tight with my gas:o On friday night i woke up with sudden pain in my toes, like someone had cut the ends off with scissors, had the pain all weekend and couldnt even bear to wear socks or have any bedding touching them.Stepping into the bath was agonising. My toes were bright red and angry so after a whole weekend of pain and no sleep i got an urgent appointment at the doctors first thing monday morning. It turned out to be that i had chillblains:eek:(ps im not even old ) Ive never experienced pain like it and im no wimp either;) .And i wouldnt say its been "that" cold yet, well not as cold as last year when i was so proud of myself and my energy budget when i was following the thread "brrr its cold so lets eat some soup" or similar words.Im quite mad that ive put myself through all this agony by being so greedy with my gas:o
So please think of your health whilst saving energy,i know some have no choice but to sit in the chill but do remember to wrap up warm.:j0 -
think that can happen any time, with or without heating.
Last year my daughter got chillblains and we couldnt understand why or how ?
we had the heating on all the time and at school she had pe indoors, it was a mystery.
But its always wise to wear thermal socks indoors and out side.
Ive had inflamation in my ribs this past week and doctor told me to keep warm, I havent been cold yet and I think its all the ideas off this thread.
thanks everyone.Kindness costs nothing0 -
im doing really well i havent had the heat on yet
ive been wearing extra jumpers drinking hot tea and cuppa soups etc. and when its been really cold ive been having an early night and going to bed at say 9pm which has done me wonders in terms of my mood!! :rotfl: The only time ive had any heat on is when i had flu a last week and i had the oil filled radiator on in blasts of an hour. i cant afford to use my gas meter its too expensive and only having jsa and CTC to live off makes you prioritise!! it reminds me of when i was a kid and my parents used to do the same things till they could afford double glazing and radiators!!
it makes me appreciate it all more now!

Well, obviously some of the tips I've picked up here are paying off.
No heating on here but Ive just had to take of my slippers and wooly jumper because I was sweating...then again, that could be something to do with the hot coffee & Baileys in that I've just finished0 -
I have no heating because my boiler is broken and wont be mended for some time. Thing is my house is suffering for it. We can put extra clothes on and drink hot drinks etc but my house is falling to pieces. I have mould growing on the walls and ceilings and wallpaper falling off and bubbling up. I've lost 2 lots of blinds through mould and curtains and nets and my internal doors have now warped along with the front and back doors and wont close, I know it happens to external ones but I've been in my house 18 yrs and it hasnt been like this. It broke in september and prob wont be mended till the spring so I'm pretty worried about my propertyThanx

Try charity shops for door curtains and something to line them with. Still using my drier but on Economy 7 so using it at night. Also helps with keeping downstairs warm. Might start baking at night aswell. Turned heating down, it's also on for less time. Kids have a duvet under them aswell as on top to keep them warm at night (dislike electric blankets) USe PC at night instead of day time. Put kids to bed earlier, less things switched on. Check unused lights etc switched off frequently (my son thinks he's competing against Blackpool for the illuminations)One day I might be more organised...........
