  • My mother has a gaping letterbox and last winter you could feel the wind rattle around the whole house. I am buying her a letterbox brush to fend off the cold this winter - hoping it has some major effect!

Bamby she will definitely feel a difference, we could feel the wind whistle through our letterbox last year. I fitted one and there's not even a small draft anymore.

I think I will be buying one of these this year, although last winter I used to stuff an old teatowel inside the letterbox to keep the draft out which worked a treat - wait until after the post has been delivered though!!

Regarding the kettle boiling, if you refill the kettle (with only the amount you need, of course!) straight after you have used it, the residual heat will go part way to heating the water for your next cup. Not that I'm a tea addict or anything...

Now you see I would have ended up sewing it up by hand anyway as my sewing machine is currently buried at the back of the understairs cupboard

Ah, now two weeks ago, I would have been in the same position but we're currently nearing (I think, I hope, please) the end of a mamouth sort out.

    HI EVERYONE !!!

I got myself a wind up torch today from robert dyas £4.99, woolworths didnt have any. Also picked up some Hot water bottles from the £1 shop (bargain).

Looked under my window seals and notised lots of gaps letting in a draughts so I filled them with sealant. Then put foil behind the raidiators.

Usually when I cook a roast dinner I par boil the potatoes in a saucepan but today I have just cut my potatoes smaller and put them straight in the oven with the chicken. Then cook the carrots and cabbage in the oven also in a dish with a bit of water. Then the crumble in there at the same time.
    Kindness costs nothing :)

  • im on a sort the house out day today too

I brougth new draft excluder like foam strips to do the windows with - it s was 5m (twin pack so 10m i guess) for £1 in poundland. Im also lining the curtains today too in Bens room and probably our front room ones on the small window at least. Plus the front door small curtain i have too.

then tomorrow when i go to town im going to get a few energy saver light bulbs and a net curtain/curtains for the kitchen becasue theres nothign but the shower rail up there at the minute and i think it might insultate it as well as give some privacy if i do this.

im also goign to rign warm wales come 9am today to see about having the wall insulation done etc and see if im entitled to anything else. Anyone know if Tescos energy saver light bulbs are any good too?

i dug out all bfs unsellable candles yesterday too - they have small imperfections in the wax or scratched when they came out of the moulds but hey soem free if not a bit romantic lighting for us.
    Time to find me again
  • For those of you in the South Wales areas thinnking about this please bear this in mind. They came and did the survey in March and did the work at the end of August!!!! Everyone is going for this option as 30% of your heat goes out through uninsulated walls.

Please make you appointment ASAP as you may not get it done in time for this winter.

One tip that people could take - we have wooden framed double glazing in our house and when our bedroom window is closed we can hear the traffic outside and the wind. Turns out that the rubber strip around the seal of the window is missing.

So if you have wooden frames, get those seal strips checked!!!
