can anyone remember about that cling film stuff you put on single glased windows andthen blow it with a hardryer? is it any good, is it cheap and where can you get it from?

I used to be so tight with the heating, pre double glazing we used to have ice on the inside of the windows in the morning. We used the cling film stuff on the bedroom windows to stop draughts it was helpful.
  • We had to manage for five years without any central heating when the boiler brokes cos I just couldn't afford to get it fixed. During that time we discovered that extra layers help and it is no co-incidence that the settees in my living room are covered in quilts and throws that can be wrapped around you at a moments notice. Instead of hot water bottles I make rice packs and heat them in the microwave - don't know why they just seem to last longer. I lined all of my curtains using blankets and sheets from charity shops. The extra lining of the blankets (I used the old fashioned white woollen ones) really makes a difference. When it was really freezing each one of us was allowed a fan heater just to put on while we were getting dressed then it was switched off again. This was to encourage them to actually wash/shower each morning instead of getting dressed under the bed clothes.

I asked my hubby about using the sola lights we have in the garden and he said it doesnt cost much for a light bulb to be on.

How much does it cost for a light bulb to be on ?

I thought the sola lights were a good idea .

I had a shocking electricity bill a couple of months ago. The meter hadn't been read for ages and I can't read it myself as it's in a locked cupboard in our block and can only be opened by the elec board. Apparently I'd been underpaying for months and they decided that I owed them £180 - which they took from my bank account 10 days after telling me I owed them money!!! I was furious, especially since they'd been very slow at returning money to me when I'd overpaid a couple of years ago.

Anyway, the point of the rant is to say that I decided to cut my bill by getting a clothes airer instead of using the tumble dryer all the time. I put an ad on Freecycle and managed to get quite a large one for free!

when you cook your vegtables, boil all the veg together in one pan.

    (less washing up too )
  • I'm really concerned by the amount of money the fuel bills are rising by. The hat wearing really works, I wore one indoors most of last winter - anytime I forgot myself when someone came to the door - I was just going outside to the garden! I have a big fleece, then if I'm really cold that goes over the top of my jumper!!
I tried not to have the heating on at all during the day, I either use a wheat bag warmed in the microwave or a hot water bottle when running a bath as the water coming out the tap was already hot. I try not to have much water in the bath as you're paying for it to be heated. You can also hang a sheet to dry over a door, just wipe any dust from the top of the door first.
I visit my nieghbours quite regularly during the winter if I can - taking my hat off first! Doesn't cost anything to get there!
If I have any reading to do, I'll sit in bed and read -lovely and toasty!
We are all trained in turning off unused lights, we have energy saving bulbs in most of the rooms, they were freebies, some light fittings don't take them.
We turned down the water heat and the radiators.
  • I use steamer for
  • I use steamer for cooking the veg, if I'm cooking something like chops (usually value ones!!) I cook them in a roasting pan in the oven in gravy, sometimes I put the potatoes in with it as well and if I've got malt loaves
