    Jesicamb: You can hang thermal linings inside your curtains, these will keep the heat in.......if your rail is strong enough you can hang them as loose linings, otherwise you will have to tack them into the curtains on top of the old lining.........

    I have thermal blackout linings in the lounge and bedroom, and I made a curtain for the door by joining two curtains together, joining the linings and sewing the lining into the tape on the top of the curtain, its amazing the amount of heat it keeps in. I turned off the rad in the hall, the thermostat was in there and as the hall was very small it warmed up quite quickly, so the thermostat shut the heating off in the rest of the house.......it took me ages to realise what was going on, we went through the whole winter last year without the rad on and did not notice a difference....all curtains are drawn as it starts to get dusk, bedroom doors are kept closed, we do not have a radiator on the landing, the stairs are open plan into the living room so the heat rises, its just a small square, the window has curtains with thermal linings on....we do have a slight disadvantage that three of our windows are not double glazed, but they have been sealed with foam strips, we still loose a lot of heat through them.......

  • If you are E7 get a timer so you get set your washing machine to come on during your cheapo time.

    Would 2nd towels as draught excluders.

    My house is like a fridge in winter and when you in the bathroom you can see your breath so am going to have to fork out for a fan heater in there - are they expensive to rum?

    get a cat!
    recently it's been cold and hubby has said to put the heating or the fire on. and along comes ickle kitty snuggles up in our laps and keeps us toasty warm all evening!
    she's going to save us money in gas i'm sure - i hope it's more than she costs in food.

    Lol, don't bank on it. My cats totally refuse to be money saving and are picky individuals. I have successfully pared the human food budget right down, but there has been no reductions in the cat's food budget.

    My house was like that when I bought it. Improving the loft insulation made a massive differnece as did bleeding the radiators. I hope you find a solutions because its just so miserable being cold. I used to go out for long brisk walks to warm up!
  • Every year I say it but this year I'm definitely make a 'sausage dog' draft excluder for the front door - in fact this thread has spurred me on to start it tonight......:D

    so far I have thought of the following;

    I will never use my tumble dryer again, I have purchased a BIG clothes horse today to hang all my washing on.
    I will do all my baking in the evening so the oven heats up the house at the same time (killing 2 birds with one stone).

    I do the same - or hang the big items like duvet covers over the stair bannister. Cooking in the evening is a good tip, thanks.

    lol i do that!
    This isnt a particularly winter thing but i am going to learn how to cook more and bake using the microwave as i think our oven is costing us a fortune in gas!
