  • All appliances like washing machines, tumbe driers and dishwashers can be used overnight on cheap rate electricity. Some appliances have a delay switch otherwise use plug in time switches which are cheap now. Our new tumble drier would not work on a timer until I jammed the on switch with a bit of cardboard and some strong tape. You can also heat up a tank full of hot water overnight. Be aware though that daytime electricity will cost more.
  • Clean your teeth while running the hot tap for hot water in the bathroom. If you have a really old house I would check the cold water tank in the loft first to make sure it is covered properly. One house we lived in had the tank partly covered with a filthy sack!
Keep a jug by the kitchen sink for the same water and use it for the dog or houseplants or watering the garden.

For health reasons you really shouldn't do this. If you have ever had a hot water cylinder removed and seen the filthy residue and sediment that lurks in the bottom you would barf just thinking about it. LOL Also turning down the hotwater too low can also cause all manner of nasties that are killed at temps above 60 c to breed unchecked.

Unfortuantly I have Reynauds and unless the room temprature is OK I get cold very quickly. Makes no odds how many layers I put on! Or covers on my bed! My body knows even then when the heating is about to go (can tell if the temprature is going down!) and when it goes on even if I cant hear it I can feel it!

To add to this I live in a much cooler part of the UK than most of you!

So though I use energy saving bulbs, turn this of and that off...the biggest user of energy (heating) will continue to eat up the dosh!

Would an electric overblanket under your quilt etc. not be better for your needs. Would certainly be cheaper to run. I have a close friend with Reynauds and another with white finger syndrome who have to keep warm very carefully.

  • sammy-kaye: last year primark had a pack of two pairs of slipper socks for £3 - I got some and they are fab although they aren't as fluffy as the totes ones that my MIL bought me a couple of years earlier - still, they do the job. I also got some as a present for my S-I-L but as she and DH's Brother are a bit label led I'm sure they probably didn't go down as well - well I'm still waiting for the thank you ......
But I'm going to say this once, and once only, Gene. Stay out of Camberwick Green :D

I always take a j cloth and give the sink and tile surround a quick wipe around whilst the hot tap is getting hot.

We bought one of those old fashioned wind up alarm clocks, with bells on top, which is not only more effective at waking us up, but saves leaving the radio alarm on all night.

We also have a touch lamp in the bathroom for nightime visits which is battery powered and I am sure this is better than switching on the full three spotlights in there.

  • Someone mentioned these are good for keeping in the heat in the winter, but cost a lot. There's often heavy velvet and lined curtains for sale on Ebay, and they are a fraction of what they would cost new:j

I am seriously thinking about fitting curtains round our double bed with ceiling mounted rails for a sort of modern take on a 4 poster this winter. Still have to convince the GF though.
