I know, thats what happens when you keep your house warm and watch TV or use your dryer whenever you so require. It makes you unkind and resentful...

And - after a life of freezing, wearing huge jumpers in winter, waiting for days for your clothes to dry on the horse and missing every bit of good telly Murdoch sends our way - when you get old you can feel comfort in knowing that what you did and the restricted life you lived contributed as close to nothingas you can get toward helping the environment.0 -
re:thermilate I have read so many places saying it reduces heat loss by anything up to 40% that I don't believe it.

Apparently it had a deprived childhood - so it has told us elsewhere. Funny the way these days that having a tough time of it gives you license to be rude and unpleasant to other folk, isn't it. I guess I want to know what the total cost is before I give the go ahead - I'm figuring anything up to about £50 is worth a punt...much over and I might have to think again though...
edited to say though I'd be surprised if it was 40% saving, but to me even if it was 10% then it would be worth it - our energy bills are up on £2k a year so even a little difference would help.0 -
I've only just found out the difference between our economy 7 rates so I'm doing it all after 10pm now - difference between 13p per unit before 10 pm and 5p after ;)quote]
I'm not sure if this is true of all electricity companies, but our Economy7 operates between 1am and 8am in British Summer Time, and between midnight and 7am, GMT. (Essentially the same hours, if you think about the clocks going back/forwards).
If that's the same with your company, you could still be paying the higher rate for electricity used between 10pm and 1am? Worth checking - you may be able to hear your meter click from one rate to the other, though this doesn't seem to happen at precisely the right time here!

Only just over a quarter of the way through this thread, so I apologise if I'm repeating anything said since.....
My main oven and grill are electric (though the grill hasn't worked since just after Easter, and the repair man hasn't yet managed to get a new element for it), and we have a gas hob.
I notice people say to turn off the hob early and leave things to finish cooking with the residual heat (and tight fitting lid) -- but I don't think this works as well on gas as it does on an electric hob
But I rarely cook enough to fill the oven in one go (freezers are too full to cook several meals at a time just now), so have been using my combination microwave as a traditional oven instead whenever possible. Even my roasting tin fits in there if that's all I'm using..... in fact I think the only thing I can't do that way is oven chips, as the tray is tooooo big for the oven !!
I spotted people mention adding a spare blanket or similar on top of the matress -- I currently have a double quilt on a single bed, fold it in half, and sleep between the layers. I guess this has the same effect, but also means I no longer feel the draft that I used to get from where the bed pushes up against the wall.
I've also noticed the draft up the side of the bed has reduced since I moved furniture around -- the bed is now against an internal wall instead of an external one. Pretty obvious really, but not something I'd thought about
Our place is pretty well insulated (built 6 years ago), and the immersion has a moulded jacket. A couple of weeks ago we had problems with the heating system (was heating the radiators to sauna temperatures, even though the controls were set to water only -- got British Gas out to that one pretty quickly), so I reduced the time the system was on for anything. Used to heat water for half an hour in the morning and an hour at night -- but now only have it on for the morning slot, as I discovered we still had enough hot water in the evening !!! (Am hoping to see a difference in my gas useage from that when I read the meter next weekend.)Cheryl0
