You need to show that you are interested in the course, why that is, and why that particular course. You also need to show what you can bring to the university 'community' as a whole.

Write formally, with no contractions (do not instead of don't, etc) and make sure all spelling and grammar is correct.

It's been a few years since I wrote an undergraduate personal statement though.

I wrote mine by writting bullet points about why I want to do the course - what attracted me to the subject, what specifically I was interested in, and used a few experiences from my life which have influenced my decision to apply for that course. Then wrote the actual statement in prose using the bullet points as a guide.

I just found a copy of my statement - I included a short paragraph of why I was applying to that university - I didn't use the name as I was applying to a couple but I said:
I have chosen to apply to your university as it has a good reputation both as a university and for biomedical sciences.
I also mentioned that the distance from home would mean I could continue to live with husband but doubt that's relevant in your case :p

Both great replies, thank you. Gives me a starting point.

I will write down the bullet points and it will give me something to focus on.

Good point about the don't/do not, thanks!

Sorry, time for some housekeeping!

Agree with everything that's been written so far. Make sure that everything you write has a positive slant and try not to just list things you've done but explain what you've got out of them.

Stylistically, don't start too many sentences with "I" as it becomes really dull - even for Civil Engineering! (Joke!)

I'll clear some space and then send you my husband's email address (having problems with mine) if you want some thoughts on your rough draft.

Look on thestudentroom (google it). There are numerous excellent guides on there. Strange time to be doing a PS isn't it though?

Yes, I'm a bit late in the year, but going to try and get in anyhow.

I'd just like to echo this: www.thestudentroom.co.uk is great and has helpful forums as well as informative information guides.

By the way, I only sent in my UCAS application at the end of April and still got an unconditional offer of a university place for this September so don't be too discouraged by being late.
