If you're spending £250 on a surprise, add another £50 and get him a proper laptop, with an upto date OS, a better sized screen and keyboard, a more powerful processor, a DVD writer etc etc, or ask him, otherwise it could end up as a £250 disappointment.!!

The one from tesco is ok, I have one at home, but I've disabled the bluetooth to make the battery last a wee bit longer. But then I only use it browsing in bed when I'm too lazy to get up.
I too went for the n450 processor and windows 7 as opposed to the other with winxp. Who knows when ms will stop supporting xp, although it's getting old, I would still rather have xp or 7 than vista.
Really depends on whether battery life is important to you. I'm more than happy with my HP from Tesco.4 Stones and 0 pounds or 25.4kg lighter :j0 -

Please OP don't get WinXP !
I have a Sammy NC20, brother has NC10. It is a very good product, and I have recommend Samsung on here before. It's survived Australia too. Vist https://www.sammynetbook.com to read more.
There are also better model from them now. PcPro mag has an "A" list of what to buy https://www.pcpro.co.uk
10" or 12" gloss / matt screen. ? Colour ? A dvd drive is not essential on these smart little tools. You can share the DVD on your desktop PC easily via wifi home network. Windows 7 is by far the greatest and easiest platform from Microsoft.
Or how about the Toshiba NB305 ?0 -

That's new.
As I wrote in the previous post, support for XP ends April 2014. That's maybe longer than the Netbook will last.
Sometimes I think you work for M$. In every second post you try to get people to use Office 2010 BETA instead of the free OpenOffice. And in half a year they have to decide again, pay the M$ tax or use a free product.0 -

I don't know about the OP, but I want a netbook for travelling so want smaller & lighter than a laptop.Everything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the endQuidquid Latine dictum sit altum videtur0 -

Hi
We have a Samsung N220 and are very happy with it.
Windows 7 starter does every thing we need, battery life is excellent acheiving 8 hours easily.
Sound on the N220 is excellent great for listening to music/films
( i belive the N220 also has a Broadcomm card for processing HD films)
We changed from a 15" laptop for the portability and have no complaints at all.0 -
Just got myself an Acer Aspire One D250 in red prices seem to be just under £250 but found a mint little used one on ebay for £160 it was a private sale and pick-up only so i got to check it out first:)
Wanted one with XP as its my preferred OS rather than the crippled version of 7 starter (Windows 7 Starter lacks some features standard in any version of Windows XP, such as support for multiple monitors, DVD playback -- even the ability to change the desktop image from the Microsoft logo, according to a survey by electronics shopping site Retrevo.com.
Other higher-end features Windows 7 Starter lacks include the advanced Aero interface, multitouch capabilities, Windows Media Center, and XP Mode virtualization.)

Quoted from The Register
"Microsoft's plans to stop supporting Windows XP SP2 and Windows 2000 from 13 July 2010."
For those of you on a paid support program
"Microsoft’s Extended Support for XP runs until April 8, 2014, at which point the operating system will finally be put out to pasture. By that point the operating system, released in August 2001, will be approaching 13 years old."
"Patches and support for Windows 2000 (desktop and server) also cease on 13 July. Microsoft advises users to upgrade to Windows 7, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008."
