Depends what you want the netbook to do?
I've been using a Samsung NC10 which I bought just over a year ago and have had no problems with it so far.
Great for Internet, emails, downloading/storing music & pics, watching iplayer ect. in fact I use the netbook more than my main desktop computer theses days.
A good site to check out various Samsung netbooks is sammynetbook, have a look through either the "The Netbooks" or forum.

PS. If you decide to go for a Samsung NC10 make sure you get one with a 6 cell battery and not one with a 3 cell battery.0 -

Well surfing is about his limit, so I think that would be the only real request. I assume you can buy "plug-in" dvd drives etc, if you want to use anything like that?0 -
I've got a Samsung NC10 as well after asking on here and other places for advice - it was streets ahead as far as recommendations went and I have to say I'm impressed! I also keep it very lightweight in terms of programmes and it's very quick and easy to use :T You can plug DVD drives in if you want to and it has wifi so handy for surfing when you're out and about
I paid £190 on e-bay for mine delivered and with 1 year warranty

I was suprised how good it was for £229 and it comes with a 2 Year warranty for that price (according to latest catalogue.)
Windows XP and the battery lasts 5 or 6 hours. Even Skype works fine with the built in Webcam and Microphone.
The Samsung build quality seemed better than the others we looked at.0 -
Ok, having a look at these four, would be interested in any comments on relative merits please

Is it worth paying the extra for the Sony? (is the £100 off genuine?)

Not very techie, but seeing as no-one has replied........
I wouldn't take the one from Tesco as it only has a 3 cell battery and therefore a relatively short battery life.
I can't see what the Sony has that would make it worth £70 more than the rest.
The Samsung from Argos seems your best bet as that model often comes highly recommended on here. However I think £229 is a bit high for an XP machine.
Are you sure you don't want Windows 7? I know a lot of people are resisting Vista/Win 7, but OS is now 2 versions out of date and they will stop supporting it a lot earlier than Windows 7.0 -
Thanks for your reply Luci
A few more thoughts......
I do like Sony as a brand, it has the Atom 450 processor and Windows 7 (as does the HP, the Tesco one - wasn't sure about the battery thing......... although obvious now you've pointed it out) , but are they worth paying the extra for?
The Dell looks like a good buy for under £200, am I missing anything obvious? why is this one cheaper?
The Samsung has the Atom 270 processor (I've been told the 450 is 'better' ?) and Windows XP. I've read good things about the Samsung, but is it worth buying a Windows XP machine now?2.22kWp Solar PV system installed Oct 2010, Fronius IG20 Inverter, south facing (-5 deg), 30 degree pitch, no shadingEverything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the endMFW #4 OPs: 2018 £866.89, 2019 £1322.33, 2020 £1337.07

I would be very reluctant to buy anything from PC World (dire after-sales care), even a Sony.
However if you are interested in a quality (Atom N450) Win 7 netbook, this is very good value at the moment:-
