Say hyperthetically that I post a vehicle reg no with comments is this breaking any laws?

I am assuming it isnt as vehicle reg numbers are in the public domain.

Its the comments that I am more worried about?
I all have learnt is from others on many sites.

The defense against libel is the truth, so if you can stand up in court and prove it, you'll be fine.

What happens if it is a free to post website, so anyone can post anything.

Who will be prosecuted for libel, the website owner or the original poster?

Why not post the comments without the reg no.?

At least it would get it off your chest.

I am the administrator on our local village website/forum. Recently I got a call from a very distressed lady saying that someone had put photos of her car on the forum. I had a look and it was there, showing how she had illegaly parked (On a pavement on a corner of a T-Junction blocking the whole pavement and drivers views round the corner). I simply photoshopped out the number plate but left the post!!

Dont get me wrong me wrong, I dont need to post anything about anyone. I have an idea and am trying to to understand if by associating a comment to a reg number that some where along the lines you could be sued.

In term of data protection you don't have to blank out a number plates. Such as above post there would be no legally obligation for the poster to blank the plate.

I imagine if you said something along the lines of 'the owner of vehicle registered xy61abc is a child molester / fraudster / etc.' then that would be seen as defamatory and they could sue as some people at least would know who you were referring to.

What sort of comments are thinking of associating to reg nos?

Do you honestly think they read those websites?

And another point, IME as a professional driver, many of the situations that car drivers had a go at me about were down to their own incompetence yet it was somehow my fault even though I was sometimes completely stationary or manouvering with more lights than Blackpool Illuminations, warning beepers and audible "Warning, this vehicle is reversing" messages.

Bad examples of driving are part & parcel of the job when getting behind the wheel, why get yourself stressed out over it?
