I would knock on doors, but unfortunately the majority of people in the street who have it have really devalued their properties Which really is a shame, the sash windows made the houses special Now they just look of mish-mash of old & new (no harmony whatsoever).

Hi Ash, Like Israfel and Wanghin said there is a massive difference in prices according to quality. If you can its always best to get recommendations rather than going through the Yellow pages ,I would also include the so called "Trade bodies " too.
There is one company in London who make very cheap Boxframe sash windows and having seen them I know why they are cheap.Very poor materials and very poor workmanship, generally speaking you get what you pay for.If you can get detailed quotes telling you exactly what the specification of the windows are.
Try and get 5 quotes at least and go for mid range quote.Avoid Redwood (softwood, pines) at all cost go for a decent Hardwood.
Another poster recently told me they had got 5 quotes ranging from £5k-34k which is crazy ......0 -
Consider repairing them before replacing... replacing all eight at once implies there are some serious problems. Why are you replacing them?
If the windows are functional, don't fall for the "double-glazing hype".
Sash windows respond very well to some tlc (e.g. putty/paint).0 -
Re: Repair/Replace
Am trying to determine cost before i go down repair route.
All of the windows are in a state of disrepair & did not receive any TLC by the previous owner:mad:.....some of the windows panes are cracked. However all are suffering from very long cracks where the wood is, so this is why I am thinking of replacing.
Given that at some stage i will have to do the inevitable i thought i would check out costs before my furniture moves in...0
