Official communications are not re-directed but returned to sender. This is another reason why naughty people do not want mail re-directed."If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools"

After a year of forwarding on mail, I started writing not known at this address. I still get mail for the previous owner and their kids. When it was the kids mag I used to forward this, no reason for the kid to miss out i guess.YNWA

I don't think it's unreasonable to forward on mail, especially in the first 6 months of living in a house. After that 6 months had passed, I'd start with the 'not at this address' approach for mail that's obviously not important such as catalogues, junk, etc.
We often only receive mail from certain parties on an annual basis (insurance renewals, pensions forecasts, etc. ) and it's often difficult to remember to notify everyone of your current address, hence why I think it's fair to continue posting things on for a 12 period.
After that though, you will have clearly done your bit and if the post still arrives then it's the previous owner's fault for not changing his address. I'd then start putting 'no longer at this address' on everything.
This what I'm doing at the moment. I even printed off some sticky labels with their addresses on to make it easier."I can hear you whisperin', children, so I know you're down there. I can feel myself gettin' awful mad. I'm out of patience, children. I'm coming to find you now." - Harry Powell, Night of the Hunter, 1955.0 -
But the OP has said it's gone on since Feb - there is such a thing as mail redirection by the PO you know and it's really not that expensive! Also, OP is saying it's a large amount of mail AND OP has written to ask them to change their address/set up a redirection and they haven't/haven't replied.
Fishy imo - been there, got the t-shirt, most people who don't bother to redirect mail/change their address don't want to be found ime. I agree that catalogues/junk does get through but it doesn't sound like that kind of mail from what the OP says.
The OP has forwarded mail for a few months, now is the time to act and return to sender otherwise they'll never get to the bottom of it - how are the companies concerned going to know that the previous owners have moved otherwise? And ime it takes a long time to get those companies (partic if they are chasing debt) to change their details but one has to try!
Like others have said, if they want their mail that much they will set up a redirection/sort it out.
To the OP - if you do a search on here you will see that there has been great debates about whether you can open other people's mail when it falls on your doorstep and it has been correctly addressed. Some say it is not illegal. In the end, if the mail doesn't stop when you do 'return to sender' this may be your only option - to open and deal with the companies direct. They don't tend to just take someone off their records just because you put 'return to sender' on their post sadly, esp if chasing debt.0 -

12 years after previous owners moved I still get the occasional mailshot for them! I return to sender with "ADDRESSEE HASN'T LIVED HERE FOR 12 YRS!!" written across the envelope. If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0

We had the same problem when we moved in. The last tenants did a bunk abroad from what I heard so we had all sorts of mail and even a debt collection agency turn up once. Just put "return to sender moved away" or "no longer at this address" on the front and put it back in the post box. It will mean it stops quicker than just forwarding it on.
I even had the postman ring on the doorbell and check with us that they had left, this was about 2 months on, and he was going to stop delivering it. We still got the odd one nutil about a year ago, and we've been here 3 years now.
If they should make contact and ask why you are not forwarding it, just tell them 3 months is sufficient time for them to get in contact with everyone to change details.0 -
