still recieving old owners post

hi i'm not sure if i'm posting in the right place so please direct me if i'm wrong.
the thing is we have just bought our 1st home (feb) but we are not living in it as yet as where changing alot of things.
when we do go to the house on weekends there's mountains of post from the previous owners (and the previous ones to them i'm guessing as were getting mail for 4 different people).
each time i recieve it i write the old owners new address on the front and pop it in the post (as asked by them).
most of the post looks like bills for catalouges, loans etc (i'm only guessing as I don't open them). but i was wandering beacuse i'm sending them to the new address and not back to the company and for example if their not paying them is it going to affect my credit rating with it being my address?
and also i have wrote to the previous owners if they can get in touch with these companys to change their address because if there's anything thats important it may not reach them 1 and half week after the sender sent it.
i haven't heard from them and are still recieving the same amounts of post so is it possible i can get the post redirected at the post office (hopefully at no cost to me)
thanks for any replies

You can't get it redirected by the Post Office, only the previous residents can do that.
Write 'No longer at this address' on the envelopes and pop them back in the post box.
I've lived here 4 years and still get post for the last owner.0 -
Does your lender and insurance know you are not living there yet?0

I've lived here for 3 years now and I used to get lots of post for the previous owner. I used to write no longer at this address, return to sender on the front and now I just get the occassional letter for her, although it did take a while for the companies to understand!!0

i did a mail redirect for 12 months and I printed stickers for the odd ones that slip through as I thought anything else was inconsiderate.
Don't write the full address, write (or print) NLR, the posties know what that means, and stop forwarding stuff. It'll take a few months to peter out.Debt free 4th April 2007.
New house. Bigger mortgage. MFWB after I have my buffer cash in place.0 -

They're taking the p1ss and using you as a free re-direct service. Tell them you are going to start marking the post as no longer at this address and hopefully this will make them set up redirect through the post office. Mark all their mail as Not at this address and pop back in the postbox.
btw, the only things that will affect your credit rating are products taken out in your name and/or if you are financially linked to a person (joint account etc). Credit ratings are no longer linked to addresses.0 -
Just write 'No longer at this address' and put the envelope back in the post box. I was getting mail every day for the previous people, but after a few months its gone down to maybe 1 a week as a result. For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong.0

Sending it back to who sent it will stop it quicker than forwarding it on.0

I had this problem at the house of horrors I had to sue the surveyor for. The previous owners ran a business from there and the amount of mail I got for them was overwhelming. I also got callers to the door too regarding the business.
I redirected the mail briefly but when I discovered how they had conned me with the house I stopped. The owner sent his daughter round who was about 13 who gave me a lecture about how I should be forwarding on their mail and thrust 2 pages of A4 stickers into my hand to stick on their post! I told her where to go.
A few days later I got a snotty letter from the previous owner saying as it had caused me 'hardship' to redirect their mail they would send 10p for each one I redirected to charity. Bacause I was born yesterday of course I agreed.0 -
I have the same issue, owner moved abroad I was passing it to next door to forward, by email. But since the baliffs and attempted charges on the property, I have been returning to sender. Its all very well redirecting post, but if they are in debt and not dealing with it, all the people think that person is still living there.
@ Millywilly why cant they just pay for redirection, and moreover why cant they let the people sending the post know that they have moved house?Pawpurrs x0 -
Agree with Pawpurrs - the reason they are probably not redirecting their post is they don't want the authors/companies to know where they've gone!
Your helpfully redirecting it on to them is making the situation worse. I bet they are in debt up to their eyeballs - most 'normal' people would have their post redirected unless they don't want to be found.
Ensure all mail is returned to sender - even put on there the date they left the place if you think it will help. It takes a long time and I hate to frighten you but you may get debt collection agencies come knocking - that is if it is debt they are running from.
You will get there but you must stop forwarding their mail.0
