Hi Dawny - yes I think they need a lot of sunshine and space. I have two in big pots and I'm allowing them to take over a scrubby bit of land about 6ft by 6ft and they're spreading nicely.
I'm having terrible trouble with the flowers though. I had one female flower and no males, so that fell off. Two male flowers - no females. Then another female so I peeled a drooping male flower and fertilised it by hand and now 4 male flowers no females.
My one pumpkin was swelling nicely but I've noticed today that it has been eaten and/or rotted at the base (I put it on a tile to keep it clean) so no pumpkins for me yet. I think it was eaten because it looks like a nice hollowed out scoop rather than something that's rotting
Someone tell me there's plenty of time
