Mother-in-law me up last week. She has a flymo which is no more than a couple of years old, but says that it just stopped working half way few mowing the lawn last week with a bit of smoke. Had a quick look at the thing and cannot see much wrong. Assuming the motor has blown/packed up - is this usual? Can it easily be repaired?

You've checked the fuse I take it?

If there was smoke then maybe it is the motor - I've had my Flymo Venturer (electric) for 4 years now and still going strong. Maybe worth phoning Flymo: 01325 300303

Hadn't thought about fuse, but just tried and its definately not that. May give Flymo a call on monday to see what they reckon. Otherwise, I'll take it down the tip in the week and she'll have to buy another one

When mine packs up I'll be getting a petrol one - much easier than electric IMO and quite a few will propel themselves = even less effort needed.

I think Homebase has a 10% day coming up soon so that may appeal to ya ;)

    Choose wisely :D

Maybe better to read the link below b4 u fone flymo. Especially If your flymo has stopped working due to a manufacture fault within 6 years of purchase.

    This is explained at http://www.tradingstandards.gov.uk/cgi-bin/calitem.cgi?file=ADV0043-1011.txt

It could just be the cable damaged internally where it goes into the switch on the handle.

    Hiya,

Just thought i'd let you know i've just had a flymo RE 320 repaired after a pretty blue spark and a puff of smoke came from the on / off switch on the handle and it stopped working.

It was a wire in the switch which had come lose and it would have cost £18 approx to fix. (No parts needed, not even a fuse for the plug). So if you don't mind checking the wiring in the switch, and giving it another go, you might be pleasantly surprised. Looking at mine just now it's only a couple of small philips screws to get into it to check.

This is the second time, it has happened to mine, and apparently its a common fault, but by no means is the machine dead. Both times mine was fixed under warranty.

I think the wire just comes a bit loose with stretching to get that last little bit in the corner so to speak an causes the spark and puff of smoke before grinding to a hault.

By the way, this link is only for England, Wales and Northern Ireland

    Scotland is only 5 years.

It's up to 6 years, Eng & Cym, doesn't mean everything will last or be expected to last 6 years.

Cheers for that advice - I'll have a look later. I'm no electrical expert but I assume it will be pretty obvious if something is wrong?
