I just want to say thank you to all of you for your very helpful replies, I'm going to look at everything that you have all recommended!
All in all, would you say that I won't find it all too difficult? The only thing that worries me mostly is getting around, it seems so complicated lol - but I'm sure we can survive for 3 nights, I'm just a bit of a fusser and I tend to overplan things!!
Thank you all again xx£2 coin saver - £0 started 09/10/060 -
It looks more complicated than it is. If you get on the tube the actual train will have the line map on the wall and you can see if you are going the right way
If you arent you only have to get off a minute or so later and change platforms. But people will help you anyway if you ask. And you can always get a tourist bus tour round the big sites so you get a grip of the area.
Have a look at that train site with two for one tickets, will save you a little fortune
OH and you must have afternoon tea one day
they have half price offers on that too

I've found the tube employees are really good at telling you the best routes to take should you need help and once you are in there with the maps etc it is very easy and straightforward.
Have a great time, my dp and I had a weekend in London earlier this month and had a great time, we went to see legally blonde (they do a lottery for tickets 2 hrs before show time, if you win you can buy two front row tickets for £25 each) and avenue q, national gallery and british museum. Look out for the baby elephant statue parade and see how many you spot round the city, there are loads!0 -
Forget madame tussauds you will queue for hours for a weekend visit and august will be busy as its the school holidays.
London Dundgon the same story as above, use to be good twenty five years ago but they have now changed it to a theme park style and it has lost its edge.
The good thing about central London is that if you pick an area there is normally more things to see than you have time.
Westminster Abbey, Parliment Square, Big Ben, House of Commons, cross Westminster Bridge walk to the London Eye, Couny Hall.
You could visit St Pauls Cathedral cross the Millenium Bridge walk up Past HMS Belfast and the new City Hall, Cross Tower Bridge (you can go inside £7), then pop into the Tower of London then have something to eat and then do a night time mystery tour , Jack the Ripper tour is good you meet outside Aldgate East underground station right next to the tower of london.
It may look far on a map but they are easy walking Distance with Pubs to pop in along the way.
If you want a sandwich and a drink don't pop in to a Cafe it will cost you a tourist rate fortune, look for a Boots, Tesco, Sainsburys, they will be small local stores and you can get a good meal deal.
Select a Hotel North of the River Thames as there are more Underground and Bus options than the south esp if you want to stay out late.
I know you have said your not sure about Travel Lodge, But there is a Travel Lodge, City Road, EC1, this is a hidden gem, smack bang in the City which is dead over the weekend, easy to get to and from any time of the day or night, a quick cab ride from Euston or bus 205 right outside euston station stops outside the hotel, on the corner is Finsbury Square which has bus stops to every part of london, Liverppol St Station is a five minute walk which takes you thru broadgate which has different entertainment each week. If you stayed here its a fantastic walk to St Pauls Cathedral, passing all the wonderful building of central london, Bank of England etc and the weekend you want is available for £215 direct from TL you may get it cheaper at Expedia ETC. The famous £1 Hoxton Hotel is a ten minute walk from this hotel too.
