London for Anniversary - help please :o)

My Boyfriend and I (both 22) are going to London in August for our anniversary. Neither of us have ever been to London before. I would like to know nice places to stay (I am really fussy but we can't really afford any more than about £80 per night) but it must be quite modern and clean please!
Also, we are travelling from Manchester by train and want to stay somewhere that has quite easy access to all the main attractions as I am a bit of a sight seeing geek and want to go to the Tower of London, Madame Tussauds etc. but no idea whether the attractions are near each other!
Where is the best area to stay for the most popular attractions and what is the best train station?
Help would be much appreciated - thank you in advance!! xx

If it is budget accomodation you could look at the Travelodge Southwark as it is beside the tube station and about 10-15 mins walk from there to the embankment for the London Eye, Houses of Parliamant, Big Ben, County Hall, boats to go to Tower Of London. Imperial War Museum walking distance and Southwick Cathedral It is a fairly new TL. Also TL as opening a new TL at Waterloo itself in July, again walking distance to these attractions. Premier Inn County Hall is a good location as beside the Eye.
  • Thank you for that, I will have a look - heard quite a few bad reviews about TL though but I will look into it :)

I think that is it is often the older TLs that need refurbishing that get the bad reviews. We stayed at Southwark after an O2 concert to save us travelling back to the other side of London late and it was basic, but very clean, looked fairly new and nice staff. I would check tripadvisor for reviews of hotels to give you a general idea of what the majority of the guests thought (you always get the moaners who expect 5 star treatment in a budget hotel, so take those with a pinch of salt). When doing a city break especially in London, you don't need 4/5 star accomodation IMO as you won't get time to us any of these facilities due to being out and about.

Im staying at the new Travel Lodge in Waterloo in July - its got half price offers due to its newness -

You need to google and find some decent maps for the attractions. What station are you coming into? Most train tickets will give you offers with your ticket now, 2 for 1 and so on. Have you checked that out.

Have a look here: 2 for one tickets if you go to London by train (all the places you want to see and a lot more of them). Oh and add in a ticket for travellling on the underground and buses.

What date, have a look on hotels.com there are some good deals.

Also there is a Tune hotel that is meant to be 1* prices being built/ refrubed at the mo by Lambeth north ( good location imo, walking distance from lots of stuff) Dont kno when this is ready.

I can vouch for the new TL location at waterloo- top location IMO .

  • Thank you all so much for your replies. We want to go on Friday 13th August and come back on Monday 16th August. I will have a look at the travellodge reviews.
Not sure which station as I don't know which will be the best for being in the middle of everything really.
    Thanks again xx

Any of the main stations will do!

But coming from manchester I guess youll come into Euston.

There are TLs all around this area - euston, kings cross, farringdon, angel etc.

OP, your best bet is to go onto
    Londontown.com
Or to googlemap and bring up london with its photographs setting on. then you can work out where everything is.

Quite a bit bigger than manchester :D you need to get a feel of what you want to see and do as 3 days is quite a short amount of time ( IMO)

A london guidebook like one of the time out ones is the best plan to start off with.
