i thought i would tag on to this thread as we have just moved into a house with utility warehouse meters installed for gas and electric. I wanted to remove the meters but just wanted to double check on here what sort of tarrifs they charge. We moved in two weeks ago and there was already some money on the gas meter i put £10 on so it totalled about 20.80, now were on about £6 which seems very good compared to other places we have lived. But then the gas heating system is almost brand new so im not sure.

Ideally we want to remove the meters! but if it works out cheaper then we wont, any thoughts?

A prepayment tariff is usually more expensive than a credit meter tariff.

Was not aware that UW did prepayment meters.

You're quite right. If you have a pre-payment meter there is a higher tariff (though you seem to be happy with the cost).

UW can also replace the key meter for people that want it removed (for a cost of course). UW also deal with people using solar panels that sell their power back to the company.

  • I was advised to post on this forum to discuss TUW, however it's clearly not very helpful for those who are being overcharged and constantly receiving threatening letters.

There are distributors for UW who regularly post here and can give you advise if you have problems with your account, however you'll need to ask a question for it to be answered.

How can people here be helpful if you do not give them a chance? Your evidence for overcharging is? How often is "constantly"?

It was posted on another thread - now deleted.

Although the poster was complaining about the high DD it was simply a case of her DD set too low initially(she had been with them a year) and a sizeable debit balance had built up.

I explained it wasn't a specific UW problem as it could happen with any firm and the aim was to reduce debt.

I advised her to contact the UW salesman who introduced her to UW, but he has left the firm.

All answered without a single criticism of UW!!!

"In its statement the company said: 'Several of the 'Big 6' energy suppliers have recently announced price rises, averaging around 15%-17% for dual fuel customers. As we are affected by similar cost pressures, it is reasonable to expect that we will shortly also announce higher tariffs, whilst maintaining our current competitive position.'"

  • Yes, I'm waiting for the increase announcement before deciding whether to get my gas from UW in order to get the 24/7 inclusive calls. From what I've read elsewhere the new, potentially much more advantageous npower supply agreement comes into force next month so it will be interesting to see if it has any positive (for the punter that is) effect on energy prices. Maybe they will offer a 'fixed' option this time?

Most of my family are on UW phones and so we can ring them "for free." To contact the others we use the included minutes on my mobile. I went over to Scottish for gas & electricity as their prices actually outweighed the benefits of UW's 24/7 calls & pre payment card for heat & light. They put their prices up and I have opted for a fixed price deal.
