Back home... house is a tip but I don't care :D grass needs cutting as usualy

Couple of questions - my US assistant (the one who worked while in labour) has post-natal depression, and also her breast milk production is too low for her to be able to express effectively. As she'll be back at work next month, any ideas that any of you have to help EITHER (she's on prozac already, which may not be ideal, they tend to over-prescribe it in the US) would be appreciated...

I'm not asking from a medical perspective, just practical ideas to help with the day to day realities of going to back to work 8 weeks after giving birth...

Prozac isn't good with breastfeeding.. it does have a rather large effect on supply.

Milk is produced on a demand and supply basis.. not supply and demand.. demand determines supply.. the more she feeds the more milk will be produced. Night-time feeding is best as this is when the body produces prolactin which makes the milk be produced in the first place, if she is not feeding during the night she should at least be expressing as much as possible.

She needs loads of carbs and loads of fluids. Mothers milk tea is fabulous.. medication such as domperidone (IIRC.. head like a sieve..) can help increase supply but how keen they will be to prescribe in the US I have no idea.

She needs to sack off work for a few weeks and concentrate on the baby she has just had and focus in getting a milk supply established rather than a piece of work finish.. stressing about the insignificant things in life, like work, does have an effect on supply too.. the baby also picks up on said stress and feeds less well causing more problems!

Is it actually postnatal depression???.. this soon after having the baby that isn't likely IME and could possibly just be ordinary depression caused by other factors in her life.. time out from all of that to look at ways to deal with it will probably help a great deal more than drugs! If she seriously wants to breastfeed would she consider looking at other alternatives such as counselling?

My feelings on her going back to work too soon after the birth of her child I shall keep to myself.. :p

Morning all, Rhys has decided that getting up at 5 this morning is a wonderful idea. He's been feed and changed and is now a livewire.:rotfl:
I've had a cuppa and i'm gonna stick a load in the WM.
Sometimes it seems that the going is just too rough.
And things go wrong no matter what I do.
Now and then it seems that life is just too much.
But you've got the love I need to see me through.

    Morning all

I've just lost an hour on the computer, so I'd better get some breakfast and make a start. I still don't have anywhere to put washing outside, but maybe next door's line is free. The house has been empty for years, but the line belongs to the neighbour on the other side - she doesn't mind me using it unless she needs it. Towels, I think, for a start!

    See you all later.
