AMD Phenom x4 heatsink/fan question

after being switched off for ~30mins:
bios reported 38 degrees shortly after boot, 30secs: 42 degrees and highest was 48. MB temp was 30 degrees
coretemp & speedfan reported 39/40 degrees while idle with 0% cpu usage and 1gb ram usage (out of 4gb total) in Win7. i ran the program poppy suggested and it pushed the max temp up to 73 degrees within a few seconds of leaving the idle state (so i stopped doing the test to prevent any damage).
Ubuntu reported 48 degrees shortly after logging on, which dropped to 44 degrees idle then dropped to 40 before raising to 43/44 degrees when firefox & rhythmbox were opened. While typing this post out, it's been reporting 43/44 degrees.

I've now decided that i am going to replace the heatsink/fan.
I have looked around and the coolermaster hyper 212+ seems to be highly recommended however it is slightly too big to fit in my case. Another one that is recommended is the Thermaltake contac 29 and again it will be a squeeze to fit it into the case.
the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7Pro (rev2) will fit into the case but from a few reviews the temperature doesn't drop much (1/2 degrees) on a phenom ii processor.
Does anyone have any recommendations for a decent heatsink that will fit into this case?0 -
Has anyone got any suggestions for a decent heatsink/fan?0

kinda hard to suggest what will fit in your case, not knowing which case it is
I have an old zalman cooler on my only AMD CPU, a freezer pro on one intel, a ...er..something or other on another (scithe mine?) and a beautiful, if expensive, noctua on my own PC..but it is a little on the large sideUtinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0 -

I'd like to know whats a decent low noise heatsink/fan for a case only slightly more spacious but with probably a similar amount of room due to masses of wires!0

If you need a bit of retail therapy, go for it, I've always had high end slugs and megga coolers but be aware that case airflow / cooling comes first.
A £500 cooler will not fix a bad case, but a couple of £3 fans . .. .. well placed will.Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion.
