In-laws have recently written off their motor and are wondering how much they may get from their insurance as they are pensioners and a little cash strapped!

This is their motor when put through Parkers:

Opinions please?

And lastly, is it still the case where you 'haggle' with the insurers? ie refuse their first offer. Or have those days gone and what you get is the final price?

Thanks!

  • I would expect the insurers first offer to come in about £2000-2500 and depending on condition you might be able to negotiate it upto nearer 3k.

First offer will probably be around £2400. Obviously you never accept the first offer!

Refuse the first offer? On what grounds can you do this? Do you need to provide proof etc?

In-laws have never had to claim and neither have I!!

Ummmm - I am missing something? Are they wondering how much they will get paid from the insurance company??? If so, then they will get the amount they stated on the insurance document when they took the insurance out - "how much is the car worth"? - you have to put in a figure - so that will be the figure - less the excess they will have to pay.

Normally this is the standard. How much did they insure the car for?
    Total Quidco earnings - £547.98

thats absolutely wrong - you could tell them the car is worth 10 grand when you take the policy out however they will only ever pay the market price for a vehicle of its spec and mileage. so in this case somewhere between 2.5k and 3.k i'd imagine.

You could put a value of £1 on your old rusty banger then for a cheaper quote.

I'll give you that one for free. :p

Wouldn't do that on a car worth much more than a happy meal.

I think the first offer will be around the £1500 mark. Get copies of autotrader ads for very similar cars to use as ammunition to crank the offer up.

    Section 9 Personal belongings
We will pay up to £250 for personal belongings
that are stolen from or accidentally damaged in
your car. We will also pay up to £200 for loss or
damage to a wheelchair, child’s pushchair, buggy
    or carrycot in your car.
Following an accident or damage caused to your
car by fire or theft we will also pay for the cost
of replacing a childs car seat fitted in your car
with a new one of the same or similar model
    and standard.
When Zurich called today and asked what we would be claiming for, we mentioned we had the 2 x childrens car seats in the back of the car. To which they replied they would not replace them as the children were not in them at the time of the accident.
Looking at the above cover document, there is no mention of whether the child(ren) have to be present or not.
Any thoughts? Do we push for replacement or are Zurich correct?

No they should be paying to replace I believe. I read somewhere that this is the case, as childs car seats can sustain internal structural damage you can't see in an accident, thus rendering them unsafe for further use, even if they look fine.
To save hassle the kids could have actually been in the car, now you remember correctly after the shock of the accident, if you catch my drift.
