Employer wont pay for my training

Unfortunately, I think this OP is just not enthusiastic enough about her job to warrant money being spent on her extra training. She has already said that she only stays there because she is friends with her colleagues. Stuff like this shows to employers and I imagine her lack of enthusiasm has been noted on appraisals. NVQ4 is equivalent to higher education so would be a big committment for both employee and employer.

OP wants us to say how bad her employer is for giving training to the other person and not her, but we actually have no real info at all. We don't know what she does or what her performance is like at work.

The impression I get (as I said before) is that she wants something but does not want to put in the effort. I would bet money that, if her employers paid for her NVQ4, she would be resigning as soon as it was complete, with no loyalty to that employer. That is if she even bothered to finish the course.

Sorry OP but you come across as rather lazy.

She, presumably truthfully, answered that she was the only Asian there. At no point in her subsequent posts did I get the impression that she was attempting to use this as "the race card".

Some of you are doing the OP a dis-service.
Of course she is saying that.
If she wasn't, there was no need to mention it in the first place.

The OP was asked specifically by a poster whether or not there could be any grounds for discrimination.

If you re-read the posts, I think you will find that no one has asked her this question at all.

"The race card"... Please! The language alone implies the mindset of the writer.

Post #2 laid almost the full deck on the table; OP pondered her hand - no stridence (to my mind) no pouncing on the top trump or yelling 'SNAP'!!!!!

Race may be a factor, it may not.

    ...effing 'cards'! please...
Opinion, advice and information are different things. Don't be surprised if you receive all 3 in response. :D

I think NVQ 4 is usually for those who are in a supervisory or management role.
Does your colleague hold a different position from yourself?
Do you manage or supervise anyone in your role?

Where I work the training has to be justified as essential for the position and mentioned in our personal development plan as a 'need' rather than a want.
    IYKWIM.
Unfortunately there's not enough money in the pot for personal development if the employer cannot see the direct benefits to themselves. If you are doing a good job anyway without it.
Having said that I think I would be upset if I felt there had been some sneaking around me and I could see no difference between myself and the person who had been allowed to do the course. I may look to what plans the management had for that person, possible promotion?

Edit; having read this back it sounds a little harsh (not intentional) I suppose I just mean it might be a good idea to look at the person who has been allowed to do the course and compare your role in the work place to theirs.
If you had to give a reason yourself why do you think they have been able to do it and not you?

Like jillymit my employer only pays for training if there is a clear business benefit and good return on investement. They won't send people on training courses to expand their knowledge even if it is relevant to work unless they can justify the thousand(s) of pounds spent will increase the employees productivity by a similar amount within 12-18 months.

If I want to improve my skills/knowledge for career purposes then I study during the evenings and weekends and pay for my own exams rather than go on a course. (Self study is often a lot cheaper than most courses but still gets you the same qualification). Can you do the NVQ by home study?

Not a question, however her response came right after this post....

complain yes but as long as they have not discriminated against you in terms of race, religion etc then basically there is not alot you can do

so it wasn't the OP bringing it up it was someone else.....

If the only Asian is told there is no money in the budget, but they are paying for other people to go on courses, then they might be on a sticky wicket.

If the only Asian is told during their performance planning that they are not being developed because of A, B and/or C and they need to improve various aspects of their performance or attitude etc before progressing, then that is a different matter entirely.
  • Just to clarify i was not blaming it on the colour of my skin, i was merely just replying to one of the questions, and no i aint lazy!!! lol
Since the past week, i have applied for a good few jobs, and i have got an interview lined up on thursday and friday.
It is an NVQ 4 in Business Admin i wanted to do, and i have been asking to do it since the past 3 years.
I was acting up as a supervisor for 2 years and when the job got advertised on permanent basis, i didnt get the job, kinda hurt really! but anyway thats life!
When that happened, i asked my manager at the time i wanted to do nvq 4 and he agreed but he was a hopeless manager lol and he never got round to filling the forms etc etc
anyways hes left now due to restructure and now i got new manager so part of a new team and now gettin fobbed off bout no money in the budget.
  • You are very naive.
The OP quite clearly insinuated the race card was possible before going onto admit basically they couldnt be bothered with effort of getting a new job.

Probably precisely why they arent being giving more training as they dont fancy the effort of hard work and wants the extra cash with no effort.

For your information, i have put so much effort into this job, i worked hard to where i got to, and i have continually tried to work harder, i covered the supervisor position for 2 years when 3 members of staff left around the same time, i stayed late every night to try and meet deadlines and made sure all work was done, at the same time my manager left and one of the IT guys left, and i was given the task of covering their responsibilities e.g budgets and was in charge of IT systems. Had to keep trainin temp staff. One of the most stressful times but i got through it. so if thats not effort what is?

Keep showing the new manager this much dedication and s/he wll come around. Although if it hasn't made much of a difference so far then it may be time to move on.
